Hi Bill in Atlanta,

Well, here's an answer without writing for an hour... you'll be spending that time, or probably longer, getting all the settings right for the desired output quality, because the default options will not be in DVD resolution or quality.

MF and other programs with normal capturing capabilities will not provide capture from the screen.

The free MS Windows Media Encoder can capture the desktop, window, or a region. It will only create a Windows Media Format file, and you'll have to go through the options and make sure to use the right resolution (size) and quality so that no scaling etc. will be done when imported later.

Camtasia (not free, but a 30 day full working trial with no watermark) can also do it, and much more:

These are some of the things it can do:
The region can be moved while capturing.
It simulates (live capture option) a *video capture device*, which allows any part of the desktop to be the live input for Netmeeting and other programs. You can add captions and shapes (semi transparent too) to the live capture area, optionally including the mouse pointer and also visual/audio feedback on button clicks.
The Powerpoint plugin allows conversion of a presentation to AVI video.
Lot's of options and settings to become familiar with, but the help and tips are good.
