won't burn DVD... crashes
Program crashes when trying to burn to disk. I've found many other people on this forum have had this issue... the only problem is, I can't find anyone who responded with what to do to FIX it. I've gathered that it is probably a corrupt file? Although I didn't edit any MPEG files. I have all AVI files and one WMV file. I've never had trouble burning any of these file types before. If someone could let me know a solution to the problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Just try it without the WMV file. 60:40 chance you will have no problem then.
Please tell us the codec/settings for both the WMV/AVI files, as well as your encoding settings.

ok, I did a bit of research and although this is all new to me, I think this is what you're looking for: Looks like the codec on the WMV is "windows media 9 advanced profile." It was a preset profile taken off of a website which can be found here: http://www.papajohn.org/ under custom profiles under "save movies" The profile can be found here: Heading to DVD - NTSC - 720x480
As far as the DV-AVI is concerned, it was direct from windows movie maker so whatever they have their settings set to for that, that's what it was (there is only one setting) It's strange, because I've never had trouble with WMV files before with DVD workshop. I'll try removing it though and see if it makes a difference. If so, what can I do differently (I can't encode it AVI because it messes up the audio slightly. Thanks

Encoding highly compressed files like WMV/DivX/Xvid to MPEG-2 is always a hit or miss affair. The higher the compression, the worse your chances will be. Reason: there simply isn't enough reliable data available to compress. Even if you do manage it, the encoder will take a LONG time to reconstitute all the missing data. Never very recommended.

ok, well that helps answer my question... but what is my alternative? I can't encode AVI because there are problems with the audio that way. If I want to make a profile for Movie Maker that will be compatible with DVD workshop, what are my options? I could go for "uncompressed" but those files are huge and I'm pretty sure I won't have room on my harddrive for it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Firstly, in the same way as the paper wrapping a book can't let you see whether the book is a penny thriller or a heavy piece of philosophy, so "AVI" is only a paper wrapping round any of hundreds of types of video file. It tells you ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, unless you qualify it with the codec used to create it and its settings. It is therefore meaningless to say "I can't encode AVI because there are problems with the audio that way." Which codec are you using to try it and with which settings? Have you tried other codecs? How are you introducing the video and from what source into the computer, in the first place?
A good codec that may be worth trying, allowing much video and audio flexibility. is the PICVideo MJPEG, but even Indeo5 isn't all that bad (better than most WMV settings, anyway). I don't know whether it is usable with MM, as that is something I have never used.

As far as I know, there is no way to edit the AVI setting in movie maker. You can create custom profiles using WMV, but if you choose DV-AVI, that is what you get. I'm pretty new to this, but I've searched.
Is there anyone who has used movie maker and tried to burn using DVD workshop? I went on the movie maker forum and that is where I got the suggestion to save as WMV. I believe these are the only two options available. Thanks for the help, but I don't know that I can change my settings there. Any more suggestions?

Why don't you capture using WS2: you can use whatever codec you have available???

As far as I can make out. WMM allows you to use any capture device on your system with any appropriate codec. To see which codecs you have installed,
Control Panel|Sounds and Audio Devices|Hardware|Video Codecs|Properties. I see nowhere, from a quick glance, where it restricts saves to DV-AVI or WMV.
If you need an entry-level editing system that is INFINITELY better than WMM, why not try VideoStudio??? Using a minimal beginning-amateur system like WMM with a pro authoring system like WS2 is almost like running a Rolls-Royce on bicycle wheels.

I have video studio, but this is an old project that I'm trying to burn to DVD that I created in movie maker. The project is done and I don't wish to do it all over again in video studio. So, the capturing is done and the project is done, now I just need to save it as a video file. It was captured "DV-AVI" in the capture menu (movie maker) and when I finish it, I can save it as "DV-AVI" (it does not give me settings that I can adjust from what I can see) but when I do, the audio skips when there are transitions, so I saved it in WMV. I do not see any other options in movie maker. If I am wrong, I want to know where to find these options. I am new to this, so I may be missing something. What I know though, is that I'm trying to burn a DVD of an old project I worked on. The project is complete and the DVD authoring will be complete once I get this file to work in Workshop. If there is a way to re-encode this project to a different format in movie maker, I'd like to know about it. After I complete a project and select "save movie file" and select "to my computer" it only gives me the options of DV-AVI or a bunch of options that if you select them, are all WMV format. I don't think it is possible to adjust these, but it IS possible to make custom profiles, but ONLY in WMV format, not AVI from what I can find. If anyone knows a way around this, please let me know.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Dann,
The audio skipping with avi files is a known bug, but doesn't happen with everyone, so is hard to pinpoint the exact cause.
To get around this.
Take the original project.
Save as project 2. This is just to act as a back up in case you do it wrong
Save as dv-avi.
open new project and import dv-avi onto timeline.
Mute all the audio.
Import the wmv file you have made.
Drop this onto the music track, so it discounts the video portion of the file.
Save as dv-avi.
You will now have a dv-avi without the audio problems and can import it into WS.
Sounds a faff, it is but is easy to do.
