Slightly??? off topic.....

getting ready to start planning on a new editing pc....not for HD, just plain old dv editing.....probably will buy from ALIENWARE, as I heard they were very good. Want to get best possible, without wasting money on things I don't/won't need. What is NEEDED as far as Graphic/Accelerator cards go???????? nvidia Quadro and ATI FireGL range from just a few dollars up to couple Thousand ??????? I most likely will only be using ONE computer monitor and also a tv monitor to see what things will "really" look like.
The difference between :
Intel® Pentium® D Processor 950 w/ Dual Core Technology 3.4GHz 800MHz FSB
Intel® Pentium® D Processor 940 w/ Dual Core Technology 3.2GHz 800MHz FSB
Intel® Pentium® D Processor 930 w/ Dual Core Technology 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB
IS IT WORTH THE MONEY for say the 950???????

sorry so long winded, thanks for any all help.

You do NOT need a fancy video card for editing DV video. I also happen to think that Alienware systems are overpriced.

If I were you, I would wait about two months, and then get a system based on the Conroe processor. The new processors wipe the floor with the existing P4D processors as well as AMDs offerings, they consume less power (making it easier to build a quiet PC), and they are cheaper than the existing processors as well:

I concur. Either wait for the conroe, or buy a moderately powerful system. Graphics card wont have a large bearing on the editing process, might make a few effects look smoother in realtime. The 930 will do all you need quite happily. I usually compare the prices and find the sweetest price point and buy that processor, where I get the most bang for my buck.
I'm waiting for the conroe.
