is their a way to copy protect a disc?

Post by Ilene »

Hi all ...just wondering if there was a way in VS9 ( I have 10 plus but haven't loaded it yet)...to "copy protect" a disc. I was hoping there was something you could select so that people couldn't make copies, once the disc was burned. I didn't see any options that worked for this, but maybe someone has an idea???

let me know.
thanks...Ilene

There is nothing that offers complete protection against copying - games manufacturers etc have been trying for years but there is always a copy program out there that will defeat whatever their latest schema is to protect their product

VS X can't do anything for "copyright" protection (as opposed to copy protection) - you need DVD Workshop 2, which has options for Macrovision, CSS and Region Coding - but these will only deter against people who don't want to go to a lot of trouble. Like burgular alarms for your house, a determined thief will always find a way in, so too with somebody who really wants to copy your work.

copy protect

Ok...thanks. I figured as much. I was just hoping there was an easy way to make it complicated for someone to make duplicate copies of my work.

You can't put CSS (digital copy ptotection) on a "burned" DVD. I'm not sure about Macrovision (analog copy protection). I think it is technically possible to enable Macrovision, because the Macrovision signal is generated by the DVD player... The DVD just has to tell the player to turn it on.

Both require an EXPEN$IVE license!!!!!
The licensor of CSS encryption technology is DVD CCA (Copy Control Association), a non-profit trade association with offices at 225 B Cochrane Circle, Morgan Hill, CA. There is a $15,000 annual licensing fee, but no per-product royalties. Send license requests to css-license@lmicp.com , technical info requests to css-info@lmicp.com . Before December 15, 1999, CSS licensing was administered on an interim basis by Matsushita.

Macrovision licenses its analog anti-recording technology to hardware makers. There is a $30,000 initial charge, with a $15,000 yearly renewal fee. The fees support certification of players to ensure widest compatibility with televisions. There are no royalty charges for player manufacturers. Macrovision charges a royalty to content publishers (approximately 4 to 10 cents per disc, compared to 2 to 5 cents for a VHS tape).
DVD Workshop allows you to set "flags" on your master DLT (tape). You send that DLT to the duplication plant, and your DVDs are made with copy protection.

There is something called CPRM (Copy Protection for Recordable Media) that can be put on "burned" DVDs. But, I don't know of any software that has it.

Yes - for a fairly small cost I have a DVD copy program that effortlessly bypasses CSS, region codes etc.

You just have to accept that copying technology is alive and well, and out there.. :(

It is possible

Hi Ilene,

I Use the freeware program DVDshrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org) for unprotect dvd (I use only for my original dvd).

The program is easy to use for make backup copy of dvd or edit.

The program makes a copy on hard drive, delete the protection and then you can open with VS for editing. :)

Regards
