Frame or field based question

Post by whoppke »

I will be making an NTSC DVD for viewing on a TV, of a number of still images only, in JPG or BMP format using VS 9 and following recommended procedures. There will be no video involved. Should Project Properties be set to frame based or field based?
Thank you

Similar question. What if you want to have video (from DV footage) and an image slide show? I guess you have to use lower field but then I think you loose some quality in the image slide show. Is it not possible to mix video and image slideshows and still maintain the highest possible quality of the images? What problems does frame based potentially cause for video viewed on TV?

Answered my own question with a test... I made two mpg files, one lower field for the video, and one frame based for the photo slide show. I started a new project, went to create disk and added the two mpg files. I don't think any transcoding occured. At any rate the DVD worked fine on my players and TV's.

Frame or Field based question

Thanks Sleekdigital
After my original post, which Ken so kindly answered, I also thought about adding a short Mpeg video at the start as a introduction. This would be a short motion AVI video made with Ulead Cool 3d. Kind of like the 'Twentieth Century Fox' intro before a theater movie. I was going to further ask Ken if this posed a problem being it should be field based. I was going to try a test as you did but you beat me to it. Glad to see it worked for you and it looks like its the way to go. Will keep the the share/create video files separated based on whether they are video or still images.
(Please excuse the following if I get off track for this forum: Ken and other forum members from 'down under': While with the US Navy I visited Perth, Adelaide and Geraldton Australia in 1964. Your people were the kindest most generous people I have had the pleasure to meet and you have not lost your toucn as evidenced by your sharing of expertise in this forum. Thank You!

Thanks for your kind words. As for using the mixed formats, the question has already been answered. But I thought I'd add a footnote to your comment about an animated title done in Cool 3D. I do that all the time. And I think you will find that Cool 3D cannot produce anything but uncompressed, frame based AVIs as in video format (leaving aside the question of animated GIFs...)
