File balloons if "Don't convert Mpeg compliant" is
Now that I figured out I need to check off "Do not convert Mpeg compliant files" to make a new DVD from an existing DVD (see my other post) I now find I cannot do so from a 2 hour source video.
If I check if off, the file size balloons from 3.89g to 7.19g and will not fit on the DVD at the 4500, full frame, 80% data rate. I need to go way to to 2500 at 320x240 to make it fit.
This makes no sense. I would think it would almost be a 1 for 1 transfer from the old to the new with little if any conversion going on.
Any thoughts?

According to my handy Bitrate Calculator :
2 hours with AC3 audio is 4,570 kbps
2 hours with LPCM audio is 3,230 kbps
2 hours with AC3 audio is 4,570 kbps
2 hours with LPCM audio is 3,230 kbps
With LPCM audio it won't fit. With AC3, it should fit but you are cutting it close.2 hour source video... will not fit on the DVD at the 4500....
7GB for 2 hours works-out to a bitrate higher than 4500 (but I haven't calculated it...)...the file size balloons from 3.89g to 7.19g...
If it's a little over 2 hours with, LPCM, that's possible.I need to go way to to 2500
FYI - The resolution doesn't figure into the formula. The number of bits per second simply gets converted into GB per hour.at 320x240...

Hey Doug:
I know it should fit. But, it does not.
I still get over 7gigs IF I check off "Do not covert compliant Mpeg files"
If I uncheck it it drops to under 4 gigs.... and, yes, it easily fits.
However, if I do not check it I will get no audio recorded on the DVD (see my other post of today).
So the real question here is, why does checking it off make the file almost twice as big? It should almost pass through as is... it would seem to me.

Well... according to the tech at Ulead I just spoke with, he says the actual size of my original DVD-R I captured into MF3 must be 7.19 gigs in size. Even though the DVD-R only holds 4.7 gigs.
This is why it won't fit on the new DVD-R when I check off Do not convert to Mpeg compliant files. Checking it off tells MF3 to leave the original files alone and pass them on through as is... all 7.19 gigs of them.
When unchecked, MF3 will compress them (actually recompress them since they are already Mpeg compressed once) and this is why the file size gets way smaller.
Well, I went in to Explorer and found the imported files. Ulead made 34 files of various sizes for the 2 hours of material and it totals 4.9 gigs. The extra probably due to the headers for each seperate AVi file it made. This is way shy of the 7 gigs the tech stated there probably was.
So this is still unresolved but it does seem to mean the software will not allow you to import a DVD much larger than around 1 hour at a data rate of around 4000kbits if you expect to re-encode it back out as a new DVD intact and at a similar data rate as the original.

You lost me now. Didn't you say you imported from a DVD and told MF to leave compliant mpeg files alone? How come you got AVI files captured? I think there is something not quite right with your process.
One more thing, if you start with AVI files and tell MF to leave compliant mpeg files alone, it will still convert your AVI. What file format is contained in your AVI? DiVX, mpeg4, what?

I did exactly as you describe in your post, above. I took a DVD-R with 35 minutes of material on it in a single program (off a DV tape originally)
I deleted all the files (empty time line) and then reimported them in order back to the time line.
Makes no difference whatsoever. The file with the box unchecked is 1.35 gigs and when checked jumps to 2.02 gigs. I can go back and forth by checking and unchecking the box. No other changes to any of the parameters.
This sound more like a software bug than anything else. It seems to be misreporting the file size for some reason.
Does Ulead read these postings? Not that I had much luck with their tech support on this one.

Hi,
1st - you should fill out your profile and system specs.
2nd - post the brand & model of your dvd recorder.
3rd - Post the type of media your using and the format your recording in.
4th - Right Click on the videos and select "Properties", post those properties back to one of these posts.
5th - What Version of MF are you using? Right -cllick on the bottom left icon and select "About" or similar.
It's next to impossible to help you without this information. To many recorders on the market and a multiple versions of MF that support Dolby audio and some do not.
MF3's import module is an older one. The program breaks the video(s) into chapters marked on the original dvd.
MF4 & 5 have improved importing modules.
If you have provided ulead tech support with the same information as your posting on this forum then they can't answer your questions. You simply are not supplying enough information.

I installed the MF3.0 update patch and that seems to have cured all my ills. The program now indicates the correct file size (no more ballooning) and the audio is recorded to the DVD intact.
Tech support never even mentioned there was an update patch for this product. That should have been their first suggestion expecially since my problems were addressed specifically in the patch description on the site.
Anyway, thanks to all who have replied and tried to help me. This is one of
the better forums on the web and your help is much appreciated.
