If I'm importing my source from an existing DVD-R made on a standalone DVD-R recorder do I lose a generation?
That is, does MF3 it need to re-render the Mpeg2 files or does it just massage them into what it needs keeping the quality intact.
That said, should I always move the slider to 100% under compression and always select a data rate equal to or higher than the original DVD-R?
Thanks.
Does importing from DVD lose a generation?

No, The import function simply brings-in the digital MPEG data. If you check the box that says Do not convert compliant MPEG files, it won't get re-coded. (...Unless there is a problem with the souce file, or if Movie Factory just "thinks" it's not compliant... Which does seem to happen once in a while.)
If you do any editing (video filters, transitions, etc.) a decode / re-code cycle is required.

Well MF3 apparently does do something since it is making the file almost twice as big as the original... and for no apparent reason.
Will someone out there try this with their version of MF to see what they find?
Capture in some material from a DVD-R and then check and uncheck that box to see if the file gets bigger/smaller one way or the other and post back your results, here.
Thanks!

Hi,
After you import the file from the dvd it's on the harddisk.
Delete the thumbnail(s) from the timeline & re-import the files one at a time back into the timeline.
You should also be able to drag & drop them from windows explorer.
Many times after importing the program sees the file(s) as non-dvd compliant when actually they are. Simply re-import them back into the timeline.
Something to do with the time-stamping I guess.
After you re-import the files into the timeline make sure "Do Not convert compliant files" is checked ON.
Hope this helps,
MD

I did exactly as you describe. I took a DVD-R with 35 minutes of material on it in a single program (off a DV tape originally)
I deleted all the files (empty time line) and then reimported them in order back to the time line.
Makes no difference whatsoever. The file with the box unchecked is 1.35 gigs and when checked jumps to 2.02 gigs. I can go back and forth by checking and unchecking the box. No other changes to any of the parameters.
This sound more like a software bug than anything else. It seems to be misreporting the file size for some reason.
Does Ulead read these postings? Not that I had much luck with their tech support on this one.

I know some other posters have sometimes reported that same issue.
I could be the specific version of MF3 your using.
They also have posted that if "Do Not Convert Compliant Files" is checked ON that the resulting dvd size is correct. Providing you don't cut/paste/trim or edit the video material.
I don't know if you have downloaded and installed the latest updates to MF3.
They are important to install then reboot the machine.
I am just confused about your saying "Unchecked" & "Checked".
They are supposed to be different when you Check and Uncheck the box. That's telling me MF3 is seeing your files as compliant files when checked ON.
Going by your posted file sizes it sounds to me like you recorded the video(s) at the Highest Quality on the DVD Recorder, correct. If so, then Unchecking that box the estimate bar will be lower because the default project properties are Lower settings than the DVD Recorders High Quality settings.
Gets confusing...
When Checked ON the size on the estimate bar should be equal to the file sizes of the videos.
When Checked OFF the size is based/estimated on your "Project Properties" whatever they are set at.
You should post the properties of your videos. If that is a panasonic or hitachi recorder the framesize may be 704x480ntsc or 704x576pal.
