Movie Factory 5 Won't Start

Post by newtbert »

When I try to run movie factory 5, all i get is the progress bar for awhile, then it goes away with no errors or anything. It seems something is bombing on startup so it just exits.

When DMF5 is started directly, the intro picture flashes then I get a big progress bar in the middle of the screen.

If I go through the Launcher, I end up with a small box with progress bar.

In either case, the progress bar thing shows progress for a few seconds, then just goes away.

The other programs in the package, such as the Loader and Photo Explorer work fine. Disappointed the DVD player is only a demo now, I have not installed it.

I successfully ran Movie Factory versions SE, 2, and 3 before. Now I purchased version 5 in a box from a store, so decided to delete the old versions. And I mean really delete, removed the DLL's and ulead directories and registry entries in addition to uninstalling. So 5 should have gotten a clean install.

I'm guessing its my Hauppauge PVR 350 card, which none of the earlier versions recognized. Now ver 5 kind of finds it, but can't operate the card so exits? Is there any way I can defeat DMF's attempts to control the card? I am not interested in using Movie Factory for capturing anyway.

Also installed are Nero version 6, Womble MPEG-VCR, Sage Recorder, DivX, Xvid, and the Hauppauge utilities for the PVR-350. All those work.

Any suggestions? I can try re-install backup with DLL's from earlier versions, and then install 5, but that will kill another hour. Is it worth it?

Having done so well with the earlier versions, I'm disappointed that this one seems so... different. I was looking forward to the new editing features.

Unfortunately I could not try ver 5 before I purchased, because some mixup on the ULEAD site refused to let me download it because my password expired, and it said it was mailing me a new password but never did. Today I somehow tricked it, apparently by remembering my old password correctly, so was able to register DMF5, but its obviously too late to demo. I wouldn't have purchased it if the demo didn't run, out $50 now. And back to ver 3 unless this situation improves.

Edit - I can find no logs from DVDMF, is there any? Using File Monitor I see that:

DVDMF loads and tries to open nonexistant files including:
WINMM.dll, MFC42.dll and DVDMF.exe.local in DVDMF directory
looks for u32RsSpy.dll in lots of places but can't find
MFC42LOC.dll in system32

looks for a few others in DVDMF directory, cant find, finds in System32

then never finds uipl.dll
Cant find lots in DVDMF directory, finds in system32
tries to access file in old email directory (whats it doin there???)
never finds APLoading.exe.local or MFC42LOC.DLL
has allot of success, but the last thing it does is:
Close C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\ (whats it doing there?)

In process explorer, DVDMF and APLOADER run quickly, APPLOADING.EXE runs for the duration then exits.

Currently no ulead apps are left running, but others were in earlier attempts but I killed them, such as the dvd burner helper, etc.

Hope that helps... did I not get a complete installation or something like that?

Have you tried to reinstall DVDMF 5 again?

Check http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 5773#55773

Hope this helps.

No luck with reinstall, essentially exactly still the same behavior. Also, DVDMF5's uninstaller did most of everything that was suggested in the above referenced post.

DVDMF continues to look for nonexistant files, some in old ulead application directories that are no longer there. Such as U32rsSpy.dll which appears to be a piece of an old copy of studio that I had awhile ago. Strange how its still finding information about old, removed applications.

But all that happens quick, and DVDMF closes quickly. Its APLOADING.EXE that hangs for 30 seconds then quits without any message.

So I guess I'll remove 5 again and re-install the older apps. Then try 5 again maybe or wait for a patch...

Edit: 5 removed successfully, DVDMF 2 reinstalled flawlessly and works.

Also, I found a version of InterVideo WinCinema that I never installed because serial number is microscopic. Scanned disk and enlarged, was able to read s/n, and installed. Works perfectly but I don't like it - no direct control on encoding parameters such as bitrate, aspect, resolution (702x488 is legit, not there). Reminds me TMPGEnc without the other features. No way to make 16x9, and no automatic chapter selection. No AC3 sound. Didn't look at its editor, I use womble for that anyway. Now I really miss DVDMF3, wish I could find the dang disk... I'll be happy to go back to that (work for it to do is piling up).

I really like the dvdmf product because I use it mostly as a transcoder, and it does a great job of that, and mastering the disk which is real quick and ez in it. Though I could not get DVMF3 to transcode mpeg to mpeg, and had to cheat by getting the transcoded files from the working/convert directory.

I don't use these for burning either. Have found DVD players to be very picky. I use Nero, burn slow for good contrast, and verify. Verify guys, its kind of important, for Data anyway! Can't understand why the other burner's don't verify, and defaulting to a speed faster than the disk is rated for isn't real relaible either.

Oh, and my Hauppauge PVR card works fine in WinDVD Creater 2, so my hardware all appears to be sound.

WinCinema did come with WinDVD which is a nice dvd player, much like Ulead's!? When these companies merged or whatever, did Ulead get short-sheeted?

So I got something for my lousy day and dough, DVD player software. But DVDMF3 had that too...

Hi,

First, I would un-install MF5.

You may be experiencing problems with the ATI catalyst drivers for your video card along with the correct directx 9.0c installation.

I would download and re-install Directx 9.0c.
Then update the Soundblaster Live cards drivers (not programs), just the drivers.
Then install the latest ATI catalyst drivers for the video card.
Make sure to run at a minumun 1024x768 resolution.
Then re-install MF5.
Reboot

If you still get the error then delete or rename the directory under

C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\5.0

Those configuration files can be corrupted and MF5 will replace them with new ones when the program is executed again.

Either rename the 5.0 directory or move it to the trash bin.

Hope this helps,

From what you posted
DVDMF loads and tries to open nonexistant files including:
WINMM.dll, MFC42.dll and DVDMF.exe.local in DVDMF directory
looks for u32RsSpy.dll in lots of places but can't find
MFC42LOC.dll in system32
It looks like you have some type of spyware remover or monitor on your system and it is interfering with the proper loading of the modules.
Remove the spyware monitor from your system and reinstall Movie Factory. You should also disable any virus scanning software when you load any programs.

I did a search for the listed files and found WINMM.dll and MFC42.dll in the system32 directory, the DVDMF.exe is located in the DVDMF directory.
The other files were not found.

Another thought that Ulead posted for Video Studio 9 but has worked on other Ulead product that wouldn't load is.
I keep clicking the VideoStudio 9 icon but VideoStudio 9 won't launch. What do I do?

* This is due to Data Execution Prevention for WinXP with Service Pack 2. Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention . Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select then click Add . Locate vstudio.exe in the VideoStudio folder in Program files and select Open . Click Apply then restart your computer.

newtbert,
DVDMF loads and tries to open nonexistant files including:
It is perfectly normal for programs to search their own program folder first, and then all other folders in the PATH environment variable (as well as folders known to the application)!

The search for DVDMF.exe.local is normal for DVDMF and other Ulead stuff (probably for debugging).

The search for MFC42LOC.DLL is Microsoft specific and also normal. MFC and other libraries support localization, which is contained in a LOC file if present.

If SpywareGuard is in the system's search PATH, then no wonder this directory is being opened when a program looks for its DLLs.
You may want check and change the PATH and/or stop the Spyware detection.

Use the File Monitor on a working program before evaluating the results
