movie factory 3.5 backup option question

Post by linberl »

movie factory 3.5. has an option to do a backup. would like to burn to dvd a full image of my drive which is a bootable image. when i click on backup it says there's no files. i can't find anything to explain this in the rather limited manual. does anyone know if i can use the program to burn a bootable dvd as a system backup? if so, instructions or a link would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

If you mean how do you create a CD/DVD that enables you to boot your computers operating system from the CD/DVD instead of the Hard Drive there is an article here:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

To save you the bother of trying I got about 9/10ths of the way and gave up after about 3 weeks.

I dont think linberl wants to know how to make a CD/DVD bootable.
I think he/she wishes to be able to place a CD/DVD in the computers disc drive and boot from it.

There is a method to do this with Windows 95 and 98 but it is very complex and involves use of a "RAM disk"

As stated above, I spent several weeks tinkering about with the method devised and several times almost got it to work.

In fact anyone interested I've just copied the "how to" onto my website

Exactly, follow the links and they are there to both make bootable & boot an OS.

It is like you say, Technical. Beyond the scope of this forum.

actually i just want to know how to burn an image to dvd with Ulead. I can create an iso on my pc but when i go to burn it, and click on Ulead's backup option, it says there's nothing there in the right format. Does the backup option on Ulead do anything related to backing up a hard drive? I just wonder if i need to buy dedicated backup software, or can I compress (zip or rar) programs and use Ulead to create a backup. And, can Ulead create a bootable backup? so if my hard drive dies, and i get a new one, can i boot from something I burn with Ulead? i'm not talking about slipstreaming, more like an emergency boot disc and backups of files/programs. Possible?
Sorry if i was not clear before (hard to be clear when you don't know what you're doing, just what you want to do...)
thanks!

What is the name of the program Linda? MovieFactory, last time I looked. Now, what makes you think that this program would be able to make a bootable backup of your system?

There are programs that can do that sort of thing, AFAIK though, they are useless when it comes to authoring a video to DVD.

Some people here would be more than happy if they could do at least that, author a DVD video from their source files with MF

Don't you think you are asking a bit much?

Sorry if I sound a bit sarcastic, no offence intended, just had to get that of my chest.

Hi,
I think you need to find the pdf instruction manual for 3.5, print it out and read it.

Did the software come bundled with your dvd recorder?
If so that is a SE (Special Edition) of MF.

I think your being mis-lead by the term "image file".
What you want to use the software for is backing up your important files & documents on the computer and have a permanent copy of them on a CD/DVD.
Usually all those files are located under "My Documents".

Not sure on your version of MF but if you can get into the disc burning program you select the files to backup to CD/DVD and then burn them directly to the CD/DVD.

Hope this helps,

MadDrummer,
thank you. on my version there is a button to "make an image file" and a button for "backup files". that's what confused me.....the two choices. i can backup files just files, but i thought the image file option meant i could backup an entire image iso of my hard drive. sadly, no so with MF.

but no biggie, i just got a different program to do it. the pdf "help" file with my MF is ...how shall I say it....less then thorough? it just talks about creating videos and does not even mention the image file button LOL.
whatever...... i just use it to burn my kids videos to dvd.

Oh, and Heinz............gosh, this is a forum. where people come for help. I didn't think that asking a question was asking too much  I read the pdf first, googled for answers, before I came here. i have found many savvy forum members online who have figured out how to do all kinds of interesting things with programs that go beyond the initial scope of the software. you never know til you ask

Linda
Regarding backing up your system in case you have to re-install
use microsoft backup which is built into XP. Dont try and do one almighty big backup because the backup file will be too large to fit on a single DVD disc.
Instead create several small back up files.

I have my own back-up methods now but too technical for this forum.
Back in my younger days I made back up discs of my then Windows 2000 operating system and everything else on the hard drive at that time.

I don't recall the size of the hard drive but I am going back probably 5 years.
The back up used a total of 7 CD's.

I didn't mean asking too much of us here :) I meant off the program. If I felt you were asking too much off us, I would not have replied. 8)

Hi,
Something I forgot about with the PDF files. With my installation of MF3.xx there are 8 PDF files located in the installation directory for Ulead.
Here is a sample of the path:
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 Disc Creator

I think you may have to use windows explorer to access or look for them under the "C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems" directory.

I think you would be looking for this program "BurnNow.pdf" That is the instruction booklet for the burning modules.

Here is a complete list of all the PDF in my MF3.xx installation.
Main MF3 installation Directory:
BurnNow.pdf
DiskRecorder.pdf
Dolby_Digital_Pack.pdf
dvdmf.pdf
DVD_Player.pdf
DVD_Runtime_Player.pdf
Important_Info.pdf

The Ulead DVD Player Directory:
DVD_Player.pdf

I would look for the BurnNow.pdf file if your installation is similar to mine.

It's hard to help because I don't have your version installed. I do have the 3.5 but that's with my version and all the updates. I believe yours is the SE (special edition) version. Mine is the full version purchased from ulead.

Hope this helps,

MD
