I am fairly new to video editing but I have noticed a problem when either inserting or removing a clip or changing the length of a clip.
The problem is that if there are titles or audio clips in the project they are not automatically moved when an existing clip is removed or the length changed.
Is there a method where any existing titles, overlays and audio clips can be 'tied' to a particular place in the storyboard/timeline so that they are automatically moved by the same length as the clip being inserted or removed?
Inserting a clip, changing the length of an existing clip or adding a transition especially one near the beginning results in a lot of work moving titles, audio clips, overlays etc back to where they should be in relation to existing clips on the video track.
In fact has this feature been added to Videostudio after version 8?
Thabnks in advance.
Problems inserting/removing a clip.

Yes - in version 9 'Ripple editing' was introduced - this does what you want and moves all clips in other tracks as you make changes to the top track.
but even in V8 you do not need to move all clips individually - please go here :-

and click on the question - - " After editing a clip in the videotrack my Overlays, titles or audiofiles are out of sync. Is there a way to fix this? "

Thanks Brian,
Do you know if projects created with (Videostudio) v8 can be opened in v9 and v10? I remember when I first tried Video studio (an early version which I cannot remember) I created a project and at a later date after I installed a later version it would not open the project created with the earlier version. Yes I know I said I was fairly new to video editing and in many ways I am even though I first started using Videostudio in 2001 (what version was that?) - I am still learning a lot.
Lastly do you know where I can find out the differences between VS v8 SE and the full version?
Thanks
John

Your first question answer is no. VS projects are generally not backward compatible. You might be able to open them, but it is doubtful. VS10+ does have the ability to Save As a VS9 Project. However the only other project files that it supports opening is Video Toolbox project files.
The differences between the full and SE versions vary greatly. It is largely dependant on what hardware it was bundled with, or what manufacturer is bundling it. Some will be SE-DVD, others just SE which will not allow burning to DVD, only VCD or SVCD.
IF you are considering upgrading, then the current version of VS, VS10+ is what I would recommend. In fact unless you purchase from a third party retailer, you probably can not get VS8 any longer. If so I would be real apprehensive of what I am getting. It is too easy for someone to sell you one that is pirated or they registered and do not transfer that registration. Another thing to consider is that retailers may be selling an older version of the software at a cost that is higher then the newest version. I recently saw a retailer selling MSP7 for the new price of $499 (I think) and you could get MSP8 for less then half of that from Ulead...
Hope that helps..

I think Ron may have mis-read the question.
You *should* (no guarentees) be able to open a V8 project in V9 or V10 BUT as Ron has indicated it is very unlikely that you will open a V9 project in V8.
Depending on who you talk to 'SE' versions are either 'Simple' or 'Special' Editions and will have any number of functions crippled as they are distributed free, the full (Non SE) version will have all the advertised features available to the user. I don't think any of us know of a list comparing the many variations of the 'SE' version and a full version

Thanks Brian and Ron,
Yes I did mean "can you open v8 created projects with later versions eg v9 and v10". I did expreience problems a few years ago with trying to open projects with later versions.
I think that I should buy v10 but cannot justify the cost of v10 plus as I don't have a HD camera and it seems that the extra benefits of v10+ (over v10) is for HD (please tell me if I am wrong).
Problem is trying to find someone in Australia selling v10. I guess I could buy direct from Ulead (their web site) but to date they have never replied to any emails I have sent (for technical questions).
A question for Brian - my wife and I will be touring Great Britain in August/September. Is v10 readily available in England (we will have a few days in London staying in the Earls Court area)?
Any suggestions as to where to purchase v10?
Thanks again.

There is a bit more difference between V10 and V10+ than just HDV editing - for instance 5 more video tracks - you can see a full comparison here :-
http://www.ulead.com/vs/compare2.htm
Maybe another of our Australian friends can tell you where they purchased theirs.
I purchased mine online from Ulead - but have since discovered it is also available online from Amazon.
Since I have a copy I haven't been looking for it in any of the stores in England - but I would expect that "PC World" a chain of large computer stores in the UK would hold stock - shops are dotted all over England - locations here :- http://www.pcworld.co.uk - - but nearest to Earls Court would be Fulham or Brentford.
Incidentally if you intend to visit and travel in the UK you might like to visit the UK forum here :-
