I'm hoping that some of you who have already received your box'd copy of VS10 can tell me if VS10 supports importing an .avi file and if it supports saving a project as an .avi file.
Thanks very much ...

Yes it does support AVI -- whether it be uncompressed AVI, DV/AVI or one of the mpeg-4 formats which use the extension .avi as the carrier format (such as DivX or XVid).
Taking your second question literally -- no version of Video Studio saves a project as an AVI. It saves a project as a VSP file, though this is only a small file which tells the program what video clips have been included in it, where they are and what editing has been done to them.
But taking your question a little more widely, yes, you can open a file using AVI files, edit them and then go to Share > Create Video File and choose AVI (or DV/AVI) as the final format of the video file produced from your project. This has been possible in every version of VS I have used since VS7, though I am sure it did so as well in earlier versions.
