DVD follders

Post by samjesse »

HI

using MF 3.5 under win2000
I have been struggling all morning now to make room by deleting files
and cleaning my hard-drive and compressing files and fragmenting and
all on my win2000 just to have enough room 11.7 GB so that I can
create a disc image file in order to burn my first dvd family
SlideShow ever. my box has 40gb to start with, now I was able to free
12.6 but I through to hit Create DVD folders which I had to cut in
the middle by killing the process because it looks like it will take
a day or two or even a week, now I lost same space and want to search
for those files/folders this action have created so that I can delete
them and start a fresh by selecting "Create disc image file". what
are the names to search for to find them?

thanks

These would be temp files.

IMHO, if you need to go through that much trouble to free a few GB of HD space, you will always be struggling. DVD creation, video or slide shows, is very hard disc intensive stuff. A hard disc upgrade seems in order here or you will always struggle.

Why did you think your project would take days to finish? How many images (image size?) do you have in your slide show?

What are your project settings?

Please fill in your system details in your profile to enable us to give the right advice.

where are those temp files locateed or their name pattern so that I can remove them?
I used win2000 Disk Cleanup util and scaned and am about to remove all temp files.

ok, some info about my setup
Window2000 on IBM Thinkpad Laptop with 40GB HD and 512Ram and Pantium4.
DVD_051116.dwz size is 1853KB located under C:\Uled DVD MovieFactory\3.0\ which has a total size of 202MB.

there is 18 SlideShows with number of slides as follows
158, 27, 53, 78, 23, 35, 45, 112, 18, 36, 43, 113, 36, 110, 36, 34, 23, 63
those phots are taken with a digital camera and have size of 120kb aprox. JPEG Image

the wav files are songs we got from CD's and their sizes are around 25000kb with only one with size 242000kb but the rest of them are avarage 25000kb as I said.

there are very few writings on very few photos. the total size of the slide bar at the bottom of Add/Edit Media window is 4.35 GB and it is right before the yellow marker to the right of the slide bar.
hitting the project settings botton, I get

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720x480, 29.97 fps
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max, 7000 kbps)
LPCM Audio 48000Hz, Stereo

Do not convert compliant MPEG files is checked.
Auto repeat when disc playback ends is checked.

I just was able to find and delete those previously created stuff, now there is more then enought room to create iso file, but I still get a pop up saying,

The working folder [C:\....] may not have enough space, We will help to clean the converted cache file. You can also change the working folder path in Preferences.

but I have
Required / Available working folder space (C:) 11.7 GB / 11.9 GB

Required / Avilable disc image file space (C:) 4.2gb / 11.9 gb

what else it wants?

Your finished DVD is around the 4.3 GB (full) mark and you only have around 11 GB free diskspace. There is a lot of number crunching involved to convert jpeg images to mpeg2 video files. The temp files will take a lot of space and you still need the 4.3 GB for your image file. Personally, I feel you are pushing a string. Your PC is seriously low on disk space and the project may not finish due to the system running out of space.

Give it a try, but don't be disappointed if it doesn't complete your DVD. On that note, I'm glad you are not trying to burn to disk. Instead of the ISO image file, I would be creating DVD folder. If you succeed in creating the DVD folder with your VIDEO_TS file in it, you can burn that file to DVD as a data disk.

Oooops, the previous post popped up while I was writing mine.

As I said, your system doesn't have enough disk space. Just because there are 0.2 GB more than required for the working folder does not mean the system should work. It will need more than that just for the swap file.

if it works, would the VIDEO_TS file being burned to DVD as a data disk work the same as iso route? I am novice when it comes to this, it will take me few weeks to change my HD.

I have created many a DVD this way. The Video_TS folder contains all your DVD files. There is also an Audio_TS folder which is empty. I usually burn both to the DVD as data and thus far did not have one fail in a stand alone DVD player.

ISO image files are a lot trickier and not every burn program can handle these. I found them a waste of time for standard video or slide show DVD's.

That doesn't mean though, that your system will be able to create this. The working folder size would be similar if it not the same.

Hi again
it did good finishing the process, it took approx. 3hrs, I then used my other PC, PC2 which's got the dvd burner and "Make data disc" well just about to do that, I noticed that when I added the folder VIDEO_TS from PC1 over the pear-to-pear that the Disc-space meter reads 3687 MB, well I thought I am up to 4.37GB, why is the file(s) different. am I going good here or not?

oops... it looks like I don't have the menu which I thought it should be included, is there an option to not include it which I must have missed some where?

The originally stated file size is an estimation based on your settings. Especially with VBR settings active, the resultant file, after conversion to mpeg2, is often smaller.

How did you go about creating this file? You must have done something wrong if the menu is missing. Try to recap what you did step by step with the file properties on starting the project, the project settings and the steps you took to complete the project.

I did it, with the menu in place and all, exept one thing, the project takes 3 hrs to compile and 1 - 1.5 hrs to burn, a mistake is costy in time, one such thing is that some how when I move a project folder from one pc to the other over my LAN I seam to loose the text on the photos, I now have to go over all the photos and re-write the text, well, too much work.

It's best to finish a project on one machine and only move the Video_TS folder. If you move a project file, you are bound to lose a few things in the process. Why don't you do the whole thing on the machine with the burner?

because the HD with win2000 is only 9GB after I resized Linux partition to zero hopping to gain enough room at the start.

Hi,
You need to be careful NOT to create a DATA DVD using another software program to burn the dvd.
If you use NERO then start a new project and select DVD-VIDEO. Then in Nero you drag the video_ts folder into the video_ts folder in nero's compilation window.
A data dvd may play in the computer but not in a dvd player for the TV.
When you burn a DVD it needs top be burned as a "DVD-VIDEO" disk.

Also, in the output burning stage of MF click on the "Advanced" or "Options" to access additional burning features.
In that screen there is an option that says "Archive Pictures to CD/DVD".
If your project is very large you may want to uncheck that. The program by default backs up the pictures from the harddisk to a directory on the dvd.
That can cause the total size to exceed a single layered dvd.

I have an external firewire/usb combo harddisk that works well on my laptop. Adding one to your setup will make things much easier.

Hope this helps,

MD
