Photo Explorer 8.6 will not install
I have contacted tech support and they sent info for uninstalling and reinstalling. I carried out this - it didn't work, same problem, so I sent a long list of problems, but have not had a reply. After 3 days. So I thought to ask here.
I copy below the points I have carried out. I should say perhaps that I bought this as part of the PhotoImpact II, but I already had v8.0 installed. This did not get uninstalled, but in trying to sort it out, I have also uninstalled that as well now. I have a Windows XP with SP2 system, loads of spare memory and hard drive space...so that isn't the problem.
I'm sorry it is long:
So thought I better write it out as a file and attach it, as it takes so long. I have been away for a few days, and so have just gone through the procedure all over again, to enable me to write it down….
1 Installed it again, got to go online to register, needed the registration code, so then had to start the programme again, and we were back to the beginning…. It gets to virtually the end, and just stops…. Says synchronizing album and hangs – the programme – not the computer….
2 I look at Task Manager and it is showing as NOT RESPONDING again
3 I then have to click on the close programme which brings up the box to send to Microsoft… The programme closes, I try again and get exactly the same. So I go thru it all again.
4 I am obviously going around in circles.
Please what can I do, I cannot get it to install.
I decided to uninstall v 8 and try?
1 So this is what has happened…. I get to point 2 on your list… and there is a file (this caused problems in the 3rd and 4th attempts above – and I ignored it), the file is Perflib_Perfdata_b.dat it is 0k but will not be deleted.
2 I remove the programme from the files as in 3
3 Carry out point 4
4 Point 5 – file not present – so unable to delete it – but has been there in some attempts above.
5 Point 7 – all OK until the last bit, deleting a Photo Explorer folder – there isn’t one
6 I close and restart system…
Back again
Well I did all that, and got to exactly the same place and it stopped responding.
Now I don’t have v8 working or indeed v8.6…
Please what is wrong….or I would like a full refund and I will continue to use v8 which worked perfectly well.

I hope someone can help me. Excuse last bit about refund...that was not meant for list, but that was how I felt when I once again went thru it all..

I would also like to add that I read thru other questions, and noticed that a previous posted was told to unzip the file.... so I looked to try that, but windows didn't offer the option (as it would normally do), so I downloaded winzip 10 , but still have been unable to unzip it. I do not get the option - it just will not locate the file, even though I know where it is...
Just in case that is helpful, or someone can tell me what I am doing wrong on that bit. But I must admit to expecting an .exe file to be self-extracting anyway.

I'm not 100% sure about what you did and didn't do. One thing at a time.
To install PEX 8.6 other PEX versions need to be removed, the installer normally does that for you. From your writings I gather that version 8 was still present after you installed 8.6, is that correct?
Now you have a somewhat corrupted windows registry I feel. Can you go back to a restore point prior to the first installation of PEX 8.6?

I can do, if I recall the first day I tried it.... which I think was the 15th.
That is the problem, it didn't come up with any message to say, we found an old version, etc., etc. So it was left.
I have in amongst that lot above, and again only yesterday, gone through the uninstall process, and cleaning the registry as per their email... and so the files to do with Photo Explorer were deleted, but again, it goes back and stops responding at the synchronisation stage everytime. Even when I delete the folder that it appears to have a problem with.
Is it therefore, worth going back to the very beginning and trying again?

Can't see any other way of fixing this. The problem now, of course, is the fact that you deleted folders etc. Going back to an earlier restore point will set the registry back to that point in time but will not restore deleted data.
You might end up with a PEX 8 installation that doesn't work either and cannot be uninstalled because files are missing. The whole problem would regenerate itself.
Do you remember if the old version of PEX was installed in it's default location? If that is the case, it may be worthwhile to reinstall the old PEX version prior to going back to an earlier restore point.
Good luck

serial no.
I had same problem to register
Load Disk go to control panel right click on drive click explore, go to product folder ex:photo explorer open the info file the SN Number should be there. Thats where I got mine and registered so I could get help.
But I got my help here, I edited the registry like they told me and everything worked out fine.
Lots of Luck

I did get the s/no - and they originally replied thru tech support, as I had just bought it as part of Photo Impact II... so that wasn't a problem.
I have also sent the file through to them again and hope during the week to get a response. I have to be away now until Wednesday so will leave it and see what they suggest.
Yes - I did in fact install it into the default location for PEX 8.0 so I could do that before restoring it.
Again I think now I will see what they suggest. I will let you know
