Sending PVR data to the PC for editing

Post by Mike-Mat »

I'm recording a training session from a PC running a DOS application. S-video out of my PC and into my PVR. I Then burn that video to DVD and bring it back into the PC for editing.

From what I've read here, everytime I move the mpg file around, I'm loosing quality. My PVR has a HDMI output. Is there a way to take this uncompressed format back into the PC. Near as I can tell the only reason for a HDMI output its to send it to a TV.

How can I capture the HDMI as Data?

Or

What should I be doing to preserve the quality?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Mike

You don't loose quality just copying mpg files its when you edit them in a non liner editer (NLE) and add transitions or enhance the video. Video quality is lost when the mpgs are rerendered. If you just cut and trim video and don't rerender you should retain the original quality of the video.

MD: Im recording a DOS application for an Industrial training DVD. I make training CD & DVD's for industry. This is an industrial CNC control for a milling machine. It runs under DOS 6.

I would normally create avi's using Camtasia and edit them down to CD format. But when I run ths CNC Control (PC based simulator) It jumps into a Dos window running 80 x 25 colums (text mode). Camtasia only caputres the Windows screens.

So I take the s-video output of my PC card and feed it to the DVR. I was going to take an old PC. throw in a TV capture card and use it to capture the s-video signal, but I thought a DVR would be more versitle in the long run. It is, It just poses a different set of challenges.

I;m concerned about the quality because of the round about way I have to go......

s-video to DVR - DVR to DVD - DVD to VS10 (capture/import) - VS10 (adding titles/transitions/jpg stills) and rendering to a final Mpg - That then gets combined with several other mpg's for the final DVD compilation. A training DVD with 6 lessons.
