Hi,
Sorry to jump in again. I downloaded the
instruction manuals for your camcorder.

There are 4 manuals in pdf format to download. One of them specifically
gives step by step instructions on how to use the pass-thru feature
connecting a VCR to the camera and DV-Out to the computer.
According to the instuctions you MUST activate the DV-out via the
CAMCORDERS MENU SYSTEM.
Also:
The A/V -> DV-Out may not be available if you don't have the external
power supply connected and turned on. The unit will not output DV using
the battery. The external power source must be used.

This is the documentation file section: Do not type the "E" in the model
number when searching. I used the DCR-HC20 to find the files.

Hi fellers.
After all your help, for which I am grateful, I have reached the end of my abilities and will take the whole caboosh into local computer shop who tell me there is a virus that Norton can't pick up.They say they can mend the bloody thing.
