Post by altron »

Hello, I am new to the forum and to Videostudio. My question is that I am try to capture VHS video through a capture device and the video in the preview window keeps freezing and it won't start again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Make sure that the Preview Target in the Preferences is not set to a Dual-Head or DV device.

2. Update the graphics card drivers to the latest WHQL-certified drivers if you haven't done that recently.

Are using ADS Tech's capture software (something like CapWiz), or a special version of VideoStudio that came bundled with the device? If you haven't tried CapWiz, then give that a a go to see if there's any difference.

Also, check if there are any software/driver updates available from ADS tech's support pages.

Is your computer a desktop or laptop? Try disabling the hardware acceleration from FULL to somehwere in the middle for your graphics hardware.

This problem is usually caused by a bad MPEG file. (Sometimes a bad MPEG will play-back OK, so it can be hard to tell.) The video file may have been corrupted during capture or during editing.

In general, you should use the special capture software that came with your capture hardware (in your case Cap Wiz).

It appears that DVD Xpress DX2 can only capture to various MPEG formats. This is OK as long as you don't want to edit your videos. This is BAD if you want to edit your videos. I also made the mistake of buying an MPEG-only capture device! :(

MPEGs are not meant to be edited. In theory, you can cut & splice MPEGs, but any real editing (transitions, color correction, title-overlays, etc.) requires the MPEG to be decoded and re-coded. Since MPEG is lossy compression, you loose some quality with the additional encode step.

Ulead seems to have difficulty editing MPEGs, and you may end-up with corrupt MPEGs if you try. I bought a special MPEG editor from Womble ($50 - $140). If you only need to cut & splice, VideoReDo ($50) is a great program. Except for the $140 Womble program, these are MPEG editors only. You still need Video Studio (or another 3rd program) to author and burn DVDs.

I have the ADS DVD Xpress DX2 and I capture MPEG 2 DVD 720 X 480 using cap wiz with excellent results. I then import the files into VS10. My MPEG files edit and render with minimal loss of quality in VS10. The end result burnt to DVD is very good.

I have the same problem concerning the DVDXpressDX2. It sometimes works perfectly and sometimes freezes, unfreezes as if the memory was loaded. I am capturing analog video from VHS tape using Cap Wiz. I have burned a whole DVD with no problem but with some parts of the tape these freezings occurs. Any clues?
