Produced DVD do not work on the DVD Player - OK on the PC

Post by issamy »

Hi,
I am using Video Studio 8 and do create a Video file before burning onto DVD-R disc. All the produced DVD play perfectly on the PC using PowerDVD and Window Medi Player - But do not work completly or partly (chock and blank screen on TV) when in the DVD player. Sometime I get a "chek disk" error message on the DVD Player. tried several DVD media make but no luck. Also, when I used a DVD-RW it plays fine on the pc and player. I have an LG DVD player (2 years old).
Please Assist.

Try reducing the burn speed from the supported maximum to maybe 4x for recordable media, 2x for rewriteable media.

Also check the database on videohelp.com to see if your DVD player can read rewriteable media, and what the compatibility with your recordable media is.

That's about all I can suggest with the information available.

Hi

Try burning a DVD+R.
Ive had this trouble at odd times with DVD-R's that have been burnt not playing in various stand alone players. Although I understand LG players should play both.

The normal reason for your problem is as mentioned by Thoff.
In addition please update your user profile with your system specifications.
Also check the LG website to see if there is any updated firmware for your DVD writer. Firmware is the software inside the DVD writer that makes it work. Its rather like the BIOS of a computer.

Thanks guys for your replies. I am actually burning at the lowes speed 1X (my drive in the pc support a max of 2X). The strange thing is that the rewritable-DVD play OK on the pc and the standalone LG player - the problem with the DVD-R which do not play on the standalone. I will try the +R and see if it makes a difference.
Any other ideas? - Thanks.

It could be that you have a bad batch of blank DVD discs.
Take a look at the surface of the disc, move it about in the light and look for any blemishes. I once had to throw away a batch of 100.

As I said, check the media compatibility database on VideoHelp.com to see if your DVD player has any issues with the DVD-R disks you have.

If your DVD burner supports a maximum write speed of 2x, it's probably quite old, and may not have a good write strategy for today's media. You may want to check The Firmware Page to see if there is more recent firmware -- updates are normally periodically released by drive manufacturers to fix bugs and add support for new media.

Just to update this problem, I got a new TEAC Writer and did get the same problem. Tried the same DVD's on another player (of different make) and it did chock in the same way.
Tried the recording on +R DVD's and it has WORKED.
+R and RW do work but -R do not - Any idea any one why?
So I will be using DVD+R for all my recording from now on.
Thanks.

The consensus is that for DVD media, the order is as follows in terms of decreasing compatibility:

* DVD+R with bitsetting/booktype support to produce DVD-ROM
* DVD-R
* DVD+R

There are of course exceptions to the rule, but in general DVD-R media scores slightly higher in compatibility than DVD+R media WITHOUT a drive with bitsetting/booktype support, especially with older DVD players. If your drive supports bitsetting, I highly recommend using it.

I have a Panasonic TV/VCR/DVD combo unit in my bedroom that was intentionally designed not to read any user-recorded disks (thanks, Panasonic! :evil: ), and using DVD+R media with bitsetting gets around the problem.

Ditto for me - my girlfriend has an LG micro system with DVD player in it that will happily play real DVDs and CDs, and even CD-Rs of MP3s (but not VCDs, bizzarely enough) and this doesn't play DVD-Rs or DVD-RWs.

I'd given up on it ever playing home-made DVD content as I used to use DVD-Rs exclusively. I was given a blank DVD+R by a friend, and lo and behold, it worked on the LG player.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you set the booktype? :oops:
