Wanted: Your opinion of the Auto-Enhancement feature

Post by rwalker66 »

I am always torn on whether to use this feature or not, so I wanted to hear opinions of others here including the "experts".

It actually makes some things worse and since it is applied to the whole project and you can't pick and choose which scenes to use it in it's an all or nothing choice. I filmed some fireworks and with the auto-enhancement off you see the bright colors exploding against a jet black sky. Good stuff.

But with auto-enhancement on the sky is no longer jet black but yellow black. It ended up looking terrible.

Also watching a scene I filmed with people in a brightly lit white room full of natural light they looked fine with auto-enhancement off. But when it's turned on their faces turned pitch black due to all the light in the room and the program thinking this needed to be corrected.

So do you experts use that feature? It does help sometimes but other times it makes the picture look terrible.

Hi Rwalker66,

I'm no expert, however I've tried using the auto enhance, and don't like it. However I'm used to using VS products, where you have a bit more control. Applying a filter to a whole project when a short clip is all that needs to be enhanced is not logical...

I was under the impression the auto-enhancement was for pictures/slideshows.

That is probably why he is having problems, I thought that too.

Yes it probably is, however MF does allow it to be added to a video clip. I think they should make the filter inaccessible when trying to apply it to a video clip...

No. It's for video. It's full name is "Auto Video Enhancement"

It's on this Ulead page:
http://www.ulead.com/dmf4/new_2.htm

It says:
Auto Video Enhancement
Automatically make dark video clips lighter to make your DVDs smoother to watch.

It seems to be an all or nothing thing though if you check the box. And if it's like that I won't use it, because it makes some things look worse, not better.
