Newbie: no audio when capturing

Post by Donna B »

Howdy folks!
I just installed the VS 9.0 SE version that came with my ADS Video Xpress.
testing it out - tried to input an old VHS tape from S-video output thru the Video Xpress into USB port back of computer.

Video looks good, but no audio.

Seached through old posts and didnt see this problem....

This is for my job and my boss thinks I should already have this all done by now... <sigh>

Thanks in advanced from Texas!

Hi Donna, and welcome to the forums...

Are you also using an audio line, which should be connected to the line-out of your camera or ADS device, to a line-in, say on your computer or the ADS device?

S-Video only captures Video, not audio.

did i mention i am blonde????

Ok, composite cabling came with the Vid Xpress but they are all corded together. Thought that meant that you used the S-Video OR the three composite cords....

So, I need to just ouput form the VHS deck the red and white [audio] cables, not use the yellow [compoiste vid] and also use the S-video cable?

I dont want to try this until you reply so I dont blow up anything - :)

Hi Donna,

I'm not familar with your ADS device, but yes you should be able to connect the audio cables from the output of your VCR to the audio input of either your ADS device or your soundcard...

EDIT

Can't connect composite cables to a soundcard that I know of. I use an audio cable that has "mini" RCA plugs to connect the audio. I also use a DV-Cam as a pass-through to digitize my VHS tapes, and the audio cable can plug into my Camcorder...

I just looked up your device, and you would plug the audio composite cables from the output audio of your VCR to the input audio of your ADS device...

Also a heads up... Using USB is generally not a good method to capture video. There can be a host of problems. Your capture can be slowed by the USB being shared by other peripheals, such as mouse, keyboard, scanners, printers. If your USB is USB 1.0 then it probably will produce a crappy at best result. USB 2.0 is much better, but then again, it really is not recommended. The best way to Transfer your video is via a Firewire, or iLink, IEEE1394. This way it can be captured/transfered to DV-AVI format, which is recommended for editing. MPEG formats are intended for viewing and distribution, not editing.

Hi Donna,

I have the latest ADS device (ADS DVD Xpress DX2) and the device inputs look about the same. As Ron said, you need audio red and white out of your VCR and into the audio red and white input of ADS, and either yellow video out of VCR and into yellow video input to ADS, or S video out of VCR and into S video ADS. This should produce a satisfactory end result.

got a USB 2.0 port,

Post by Donna B »

Understand - have it into a USB 2.0 port... put that in my sig spot but it doesnt show that tidbit...

I have used Pinna** Studi 9 for a couple of years now, but all of a sudden it doesnt recognize my only 1394 firewire port and that's the only way to get into the capture mode on that program. [in my marketing job, I dont use this all the time, it sometimes can be months before i need to jump on this and do some video editing....]

Got to pulling out hair about it and so just wanted to get this done quickly for an upcoming trade show. We are putting all this on V-CD for handing out to prospects - not going to be DVD, so no need for DVA quality. :>

BTW, Had to get a new replacement RADEON videoboard in Feb. - you think that has anything to do with the 1394 port not being recognized by that other program?
<I am trying to think what else i have around the office that uses a 1394 to check it out....>

[the other prog's webboards are not really working anymore and like I said, got fed up with it all and just got this device and now VS 9.0 SE.]

Calling my buddy computer guru right now on that possibility, but if you know the answer, please reply.

Thanks so much for the virtual handholding! / Donna

Donna,

Have you tried using your camcorder with VS9? Unless something has gone wrong with your system, then VS9 will also allow you to capture using Firewire. You would need the cable to connect your camcorder to your VCR. It has the audio/video composite on one end, and the DV-IN single pin, kinda like a mini-RCA on the other.

However if your ADS device is the one that TDK mentioned, it will work fine...

It is working - the video isnt as good as I could get thru a firewire BUT it wasnt great VHS quality tape to begin with.....

You guys are SUPER! thanks so much.

I'll also double-check on my firewire port to see if something's gone awry with it.

Maybe you have to "reconnect" or establish a new connection if you change out a new video board? My guru dude is out of his store for now...

will let y'all know about that when i hear back from him....

thanks again / will do my best to download the tutorials [having trouble with them - they get to the last several seconds and then stall.. never finishes up] and read up as I can with this so I wont trouble y'all further...
