UPD files?

I was getting rid of all my old videos that I've finished with, and I found alot of .upd files, that appear after the rendered video file. I want to keep the finished video files on my computer. Are the .upd files necessary to be able to use my rendered files, If they are not necessary, then what purpose do they serve?

You don't need them if all you wish to do is retain the video (mpeg,avi). There probably temp files creeated by VS either for the menus or your project setting or whatever.
