I "think" I added the frame to the gallery, but now can't find it. How do I retrieve it?

Hi Lynn

I have sent you an email with a tutorial from the beginners workshop.

Because of its unique object handling capability PI is extremely suited to the production of texture maps for 3d applications. And yet I've yet to find other users that use PI to 'skin their games' most people opting for PSP, PS or even Gimp.

File format support for DXT/DDS textures presently would give PI an edge in this area and maybe could even be supplied as a 'Plug-In' or add on for existing versions.

Then perhaps I wouldn't feel so all alone. :cry:

I use PI5 for texturing 3dmodels (most for games) because is so easy to use. The problem is when it comes about DDS files.
And here are my requests:
- Plugin for dds files (import/compress/export) if is possible something simple like ATI Compressonator
- Plugin for multiple file types save (save as): possibilities to save your work as 2 files (ie: filename.tga and filename.ufo. Will be perfect to have possibilities to automatic increment on save_as

Thanks

One thing I would like to see is a way to rotate image fills for backgrounds.

You can already do that. Just select the transform tool>Rotate. I just tested this, using a linear gradiant to fill the background.

Hi guys, I hope you still check this forum for features, because I'd hate to think I'm wasting my time here.

First on the request list is-

-A decent upgrade to PI, for pro users
Not all of us are beginners. Some of us give Photoshop a miss just to use PhotoImpact every day. I've been running PIXL for years now, and I'd upgrade in a heartbeat if PI actually received a decent upgrade which wasn't targeted directly at beginners. Have you forgotten we exist? Did you guys know we're out there? Ulead has a solution for the pro video guy, but not for the pro 2D artist. Why? I'm personally not looking for a program to take on Photoshop- I love the quick methods of PhotoImpact (so please don't remove those) but we need something more.

-In regards to the above, perhaps upping the price of a pro version, and including Videopaint, since the tools of the two programs seem similar from what I've seen.

-Uniformity across all tools
I love the way filter windows are now automatically scaled to the size of the screen. But, I hate the way some tools are stuck with teeny weeny windows. What gives? If you have a new feature, my request is that you go over every tool and make sure there's uniformity.

-Side options flyout for tools
The side options flyout for tools has a few good buttons to tick, but there's no reason for a 'more' button when it comes to lighting. Remove that, and fit all the options in the flyout. It'd just be faster.

-A realtime preview for the above instead of having to hit 'apply'.
You can do it everywhere else... why not here when the little box appears with the material options? A realtime preview of what it is you're editing is essential (not just a sphere).

-No more quick fix tools
The quick fix tools need fixing themselves. They aren't that good (they've never once worked well for me) so please stop adding them, or even upgrading them... unless you're going to enhance them far beyond where they are now. The best tools are things like Colour Cast, which is easy to use, yet very capable. Teach people to use tools, instead of relying on quick fixes.

-Messy menus
The 'adjust' and 'photo' menus are illogical and messy, with duplicate menu items (such as autoprocess -> levels). They make looking for a tool annoying. I suggest merging them, and putting some serious thought into simplifying the resulting menu.

-Include a quick photo viewer, when double clicking on icons. I have Paintshop Pro 5 installed on my computer for basic touchups and rotation of images because it loads in a split second, and uses almost no memory. I would use PI, but it's too slow to load. PhotoImpact's loading time doesn't bother me, but being able to load a quick viewing program with a couple of basic tools would be handy, especially if it had a link to send the image to PI.

-More control over layers (see Photoshop) while retaining the ease-of-use which PI has over objects.

-Numeric spacing and alignment controls.
Such as: How far from an object/edge, or the spacing between aligned objects.

-A history brush
Once again, see Photoshop

As someone said above, thanks for listening.

Reactor,

I don't see any profitable way for PI to satisfy completely Photoshop clientele. Simply another ballpark. Looking at PI's history, it always tries to keep up with trends, rather than with any user target.

Also, I don't see any reason to bundle VideoPaint with PI. Imaging on video is a really rare need and VideoPaint's place is where it is.

As for fixing the mess with dialog boxes working different ways and chaos in menus, I agree with you 100%. Also I agree, that PI automatic tools give unsatisfying results. No, wait, they are mostly hopeless in effect, compared to what I've seen in PSP or PSE, and, in my opinion, also in operation.

As for photoviewer, you get PhotoExplorer with PI.

As for features, I would like a possibility to work in LAB in tools that support 48-bit editing (let's be real) and non-destructive history editing (if I edit an operation 5 steps ago, the remaining 4 steps are re-performed; kind of adjustment layers with minimal implementation needed).

I can also pay 20 or 25 USD more for improved version.

X.

And that's the problem, really. PI should be doing some really great things, but right now it's just crawling along. I'm not looking for it to take on Photoshop, but I am hoping that one day it'll be taken seriously by more people than beginners.

Agreed... it was a quick idea that Ulead could consider, and that was about it. Being able to paint on additional formats like video would be a nice addition to a program like UI, but certainly not a do-or-die one.

I remember seeing that at some point... but I don't have it installed at the moment. Is it quick to load, though?

Time Saving Improvements

Time Saving Improvements

1. "Select on object" button should be a default function when clicking on objects when using layers. This is important as a time saving feature, because when one uses a Selection tool, such as Standard, Lasso or Magic, it is distracting not to be able to use the tool immediately without having to remember to then go and press the "Select on Object" tool.

2. Standard Optimised should be the default setting for saving JPEGs and not progressive! Hardly anyone uses progressive anymore! Ok. No-one uses progressive anymore - except the really bad, home taught, web developers.

3. When using and saving the HTML Text Object as a web page. It should be rendered as "text" and not as an image, as it was in PhotoImpact 6 - 8, or the user should be given the opportunty to decide on how he wants his text to be rendered. This is because it is a real tedious pain having to then delete all the spaces where one expects there to be actual text cells, especially when one is designing a large web page with many text cells littered all over the page.

4. When a Path, Outline or Line and Arrow tool is selected and the Editing icon clicked, PhotoImpact gives the user the option to convert to line or to convert to curve. The convert to curve option only creates a curve protruding outside of the main shape. It should allow the user to select: 1. A curve inwards, or 2. A curve outwards. This is helpful, because it can sometimes take to long to work out a smooth curve when editing a shape, especially when one has to do this a number of times on the same object.

5. Your batch convert function should allow users to resize all images within a specific directory without having to open them all. -Without one having to use third party tools to do so as in Photo Explorer or PhotoShop.

6. Your measurement tool keeps disapearing when one expects the line used to remain for later reference or for comparing with another measured line. It would be great if you would allow users to retain the visibility of their measured lines. I think this should be obvious why this is important.

7. Your image browser is far too slow to load images. In photoImpact 6 it was ba far, much faster. Can you sort out why you have made this browser slower and sometimes very painful to wait on?

8. The mask tool is virtually useless, and should be in line with how it can be used in PhotoShop, so that you can use multiple masks against multiple objects or layers on the canvas. This is because the mask feature in PhotoImpact can only be used only on one object, hence making it a completely useless feature.

9. When New Image is selected, the preview combobox does not always remember the last screen size setting and always defaults back to "Printer Portrait".

PhotoImpact Faults.

1. When using the properties panel to resize an object, and then exiting, PhotoImpact adds 1 pixel to the objects dimensions. If an object has equalateral sides, and Keep Aspect Ration is ticked, when the equalateral object is resized, PhotoImpact subtracts 1 pixel in size from the object. So instead of being 50 x 50, it will then be 50 x 49.

2. Sometimes crashes when selecting the eye dropper tool when selecting a color for a Shape or Text object. When the child window appears and a color is sampled. Fix: -It was not necessary in the first place to create a window or form to do this as you already have an eye dropper tool on the tool box which does not use a form or window. Remove the window so that the user can concentrate on what he is working on and prevent critical crashes.

3. The control toolbox on an child window or form, on which someone is working on, sometimes wipes itself out and cannot be restored so that the child window cannot be maximised or minimised or closed.
Fix: - You are possibly not using a Repaint method within an event! This happpens when the child window behind focus is hidden or minimised by another window. -I have only recently found that the control box is still there, because when you click on where the control box is suppossed to be, it behaves normally.

4. Selecting an object within a layer so that selection lines or selection border appear on the object selected does not happen. This is a real nuisance because it means that one has to merge an object to the base image - which is something one will not always want to do because other images may be present - and then select the background before inverting the selection in order to acheive this. This is a very messy and bloody way to work, especially when one is working with many objects and a complex background. I have found your Show 'Marquee' tool is probably in the wrong place and needs to be put under the Selection Menu! This tool function should also be by default switched ON, but you could give the user the preference to turn it on or off in settings. Also, you should be able to convert the Marque tool to a Selection without having to use the painful and burdomsome 'Select Color Range' function.

5. You should have an "image crop tool" and it should work only on the image that is selected on each layer within the canvas, and not on the whole canvas!

6. When converting an image object to a path there is a problem in resizing, so that the object behaves as though it is being cropped, which is a real nuisance. To solve this problem, I have to convert it back to an image so that I can resize it in proportion. Please solve this problem.

7. When a shape is extracted from an image and then converted into a path object, the process of conversion adds a slight border to the bottom right and side right of the object. This problem means that one has to use the eraser tool to remove them, but if the path object is then converted back to an image and then back again, the apparitions reappear again. In some instances, a border of 1 pixel appears around the object almost as if the anti-alias is not used when converting the object.

Innovation

1. It would be good if you had a software tool for reporting errors from within PhotoImpact, which would also connect and download the information directly to your server.

2. There could be another tool which detects errors generated by PhotoImpact and then sends them to your server, including all memory leaks. Something similar to what Windows XP does!

3. Texture Mapper tool: This would save so much time and aggravation when using resampled image textures especially when one loses both quality and feel when stretching sampled textures over an object. For example, when sampling textures from a face, the Texture Mapper tool could work in the following fashion: The user selects 3 to 5 sample areas on an image or selects the whole image that he wants sampled. PhotoImpact then analyses the samples and counts the number of colours within those samples and works out the percentage amount of each color found within those samples and their distribution. It also takes those samples and then looks for patterns or contours. It then creates a final texture representing the sampled colours of the sampled texture so that the user can use his mouse to use that new texture as a colour fill over a image, path or text object. Also, this Texture Mapper tool can then offer the user a "fixed pattern" or random generation, so that when the object in which the texture mapping tool has been used is stretched or resized, the texture fills the new areas dynamically, just like any other color fill - without losing the texture pattern, texture quality or feel!

3a. You could also include a Magic Colour Flush tool. So that the user can use the newly created texture "as a color" on any object. When the user then clicks on any shape/object or layer, it will automatically detect the current color of the shape/object and populate the whole area of the object with the new texture. This magic colour flush tool should allow you to copy the texture pattern of the origional, if possible, or to randomise it.

4. Pattern Matching tool. This tool would allow editors who create a shape using the path edit tool, and then when it is clicked, to then inherit the colors or texture of the object directly below it, without having to use the Materials Panel tool.

5. Colour Averaging Function. This function should be available in the colour control panel, which holds the Eye Dropper, as well as the Gradient and Texture Fill tools. So that, rather than just sampling a pixel, it would sample several similar color pixels and then output the average color for those sampled pixels.

6. When the Duplicate tool is used from within the Edit Path tool, one should be allowed to flip the duplicated shape, either horizontally or vertically. Otherwise, this duplicate tool is next to useless.

7. A selection split tool, so that one can divide a selection around an object either vertically or horizontally, so that the selection will cover only half the area of the selected object. This is really helpful when one then decides that they only want to sample or copy half of the newly created object and then to continue working with it.

8. A colour counting tool. This would allow us to know how many colours an image or a selected part of an image has before we begin to work on it.

9. A selection separation tool function, so that when one makes a selection around an object, he can then take the selection border away from around the object.

And lastly, how about being able to Edit the Path of more than one object together, this would save huge amounts of development time, and it would allow us the creativity to make extrodinary and wonderful Paths or Shapes.

so i write you forum for problem but i want for next version like pi13 but need new tool something plaese!!!
now i wrrite problem:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBER1 PROBLEM:
-you do new document and create a SQUARE USE FROMPATH DRAWING TOOL.
-CLICK TRASFORM TOOL and click ROTATE IN VIRTUAL 3D it's very cool effect! PROBLEM SERIOUS:it's miss SETTING LIKE EXAMPLE:
ANGLE X:---
ANGLE Y:---
ANGLE Z:---
ALSO "SAVE DATA ALL ANGLE"
this because for next photo will be same place from data angle(rotate in virtual 3d)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBER 2 PROBLEM:
-create a SQUARE USE FROM PATH DRAWING
-CLICK PATH EDIT TOOL to object
there are 4 points right? then i click two points TOP and move to down (like to middle)PROBLEM SERIOUS:it's miss ortograph as key [shift] for 90¢X and 45¢Xangle because i want to move precise!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBER 3 PROBLEM:
in PI 12 THERE ARE 2 COOL:
--------"FROM TEXT/PATH TO IMAGE" AND "FROM TEXT/PATH TO PATH" BUT
--------"FROM TEXT/PATH TO OUTLINE" AND "FROM OUTLINE TO TEXT/PATH"
WHY NOT? BECAUSE I CRATE A SQUARE FROM PATH DRAWING AND I WANTED TO BE CONVERT IN OUTLINE DRAWING TOOL...?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBER 4 PROBLEM:
IN PI 12 HAVE NOT MODIFIC KEY FOR KEYBOARD!!
EXAMPLE:
in PI:
CUT=CTRL+X
COPY=CTRL+C
PASTE=CTRL+V

BUT I WANT TO CHANGE KEY FOR KEYBOARD EXAMPLE:
CUT=F2 OR OTHER KEY
COPY=F3 OR OTHER KEY
PASTE=F4 OR OTHER KEY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOW I FINISH WRITE FOR PROBLEM MISS PI12
MY HYPOTHESIS OR THEORY: I AND YOU AND ALL FAN PI NEED WRITE AND TO ORGANIZE FOR MISS TOOL OR NEW EFFECTS OR NEW ATTRIBUT FOR NEXT VERSION LIKE PI13 BUT WE ASK TO ADMIN FOR READ THIS MISS TOOL OR ADDS, IT'S IMPORTANT WITH HOUSE ULEAD AND FORUM FOR RESEARCH NEW AND PROLBEM OK? PLEASE TELL ANDWRITE AND SAY FOR NEW TOOL OR ATTRIBUIT OR ADDS AND SEND TO HOUSE ULEAD PHOTOIMPACT FOR VERSION 13 OKAY?

Feature Request Thread

Post by zforray »

Unless someone answers my previous post about this ability/feature, here is a request for a new feature.

I need the White Balance Correction process to be able to eyedropper select from a different photo than the one being corrected. This process is needed when using a white-balance reference card from one picture in a shoot.

Canvas rotate tool

Post by GKDantas »

Ways when drawing I need to rotate the canvas to make better lines or to better draw a curve. This can be done in softwares like Painter (its from Corel!!) and Artrage.
This is not like rotate tool, but its only rotatel all the canvas without reorder the pixels. Only with a click I could rotate the canvas, draw a line and clicking again the canvas will be reseted to the original position.

Border=0 for Thumbnails

Post by Lincoln35 »

I would like to have the option in PhotoImpact Album to set the img border for thumbnails to 0. Right now I have to add to the pages using border a simple css file with one line only:

img {border: 0;}

I hate borders around linked images...
