Dolby Digital 5.1 - MSP 8 and MF5?

Post by Bud Fox »

Hello all, this is a great forum.

I'm just about ready to upgrade from MSP7 to MSP 8. Could anyone please verify something that is unclear reading the specs on the ulead site?

Can I capture a .VOB file from a DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and then end up with a project that has true 5.1 sound? If so, will Movie Factory 5 allow me to burn that to a disc? If not, what do I need to burn a DVD with 5.1 sound?

I couldn't find a clear answer to this searching the forum, but I apologize if it's been covered earlier. I see talk about "creating" 5.1 sound, but not necessarily about capturing existing DD 5.1.

Anybody know for sure, or has tried?

Thanks,

Bud

Movie Factory 5 Does support Dolby Digital, Media Studio Pro is supposed to support Dolby Digital but if you run the video thru it you may not get true 5.1. Service Pack 1 is supposed to fix the 5.1 issue.

...and does Ulead DVD Workshop 2 also support Dolby Digital 5.1?

Thanks in advance.

Regards to all.

Yes and No.
Firstly see this page
http://www.ulead.co.uk/dws/compare.htm

The "Yes" part is when your source file is already Dolby Digital 5.1 and the sound does not need to be re-rendered.

The "No" is when you don't have Dolby 5.1 but some other audio format such as MPEG, LCPM etc where it is then able to do AC3 (Dolby 2 channel) encoding.

Steve,

So if I have a source file that's Dolby Digital 5.1 and I want add some additional video, titles, transitions, etc. and then output to DVD, what do I need to ensure the audio passes through successfully (still in DD 5.1 and more or less same quality)? Will MSP8 and MovieFactory 5 get it done? Or do I need WS2?

Thanks,

Bud

If you are going to edit the video in any way it will be re-rendered. Even with Smart Render turned on the parts you have altered are going to be re-rendered and so unless the editor you are using will produce a file containing Dolby 5.1 then you would lose the 5.1 sound.

VS10+ supports Dolby 5.1
As mentioned above MSP8 is supposed to but there is a fault that should be rectified in SP1. The release of SP1 shouldn't be too far off now as there was a recent Public Beta Release to establish any more outstanding problems that need to be ironed out.

MovieFactory 5 will support Dolby 5.1 and has a few other options that are missing from Workshop 2 such as widescreen menus and transitions between menu pages.

Having pointed out the shortcomings of WS2 it is still my preferred DVd authoring program. There are work rounds for its present shortcomings.

Dolby 5.1 - the work round is to ensure that the video was rendered accordingly with a video editing program beforehand.
