Attribute setup

Post by melkisadek »

Hi,
I'm importing DVD files to VS9 and I've run into a problem. I capture the clips and they have 4x3 ratio and are 704x480. When I go to multi-trim and save the clips to mpeg2 they are turning into 780x480, leaving me with a border on either side which isn't on the original clips. Can I change the attribute setting someplace?

Where are these clips originating from?
Neither the input or the output are correct.

PAL = 720 x 576
NTSC = 720 x 480

Standard settings are shown here:

Steve, just to clarify. The Sony DVD cams and, I think, most of the other DVD cams on the market do not record MPEGs at the full resolution of 720x480. They generally use 704 x 480 for NTSC.
Because of this it is important that when the user is rendering to a DVD compliant MPEG2 file that the properties are set to match the input per the "Recommended Procedure." The 704x480 is still a fully compliant DVD standard. Changing it to 720x480 will distort the final output.

To the original poster: You need to go to your "Project Properties" and change them to match your imported files before you use the multi-trim function.

I am not sure I understand Steve. Your screen grab shows a DV Type1 file at normal PAL resolution. The OP is importing "DVD files" not DV.

Where does he mention he is importing from a Sony?
I asked him to identify the source of these files.

.......
My screen grab shows that my Sony captures at the settings I originally mentioned.

I was not saying he was importing from a Sony.
He was saying that he was "Importing DVD files" and as such it is not unusual to find DVD files (such as with the Sony DVD cams and others as well as some DVD recorders) to find attributes of the files to be other than the usual 720x480 NTSC or 720x 576 PAL.
The actual point is that if he changes the Project Properties to match the attributes of the "Imported DVD files" all will be well.

I think we need to wait for him to reply with the source of his files.
At the moment all we are doing is speculating, but I get your point.

This highlights the need for users to supply as much information as possible to the group so that we are able to construct a meaningful reply.

Gentles,
the replies were quite helpful. I had a service digitize my 16mm films and didn't know what camera they were using. Evidently they did use a Sony camera since the attributes included 704x480. I checked the Project Properties and found the EDIT option which led me to the General Tab which then allowed me to reset the Frame Size. I could have wandered around for hours and never found this. I suppose the documentation would be enormously large if Ulead provided all the information a user might need :wink: , or not.

In the past people who have used DVD-camcorders have sometimes posted here, asking how they can "capture" the video they have shot. They imagine they need a Firewire cable etc etc and are asking for pointers.

They are regularly instructed to remove the DVD from their camcorders and place it in the DVD tray of their computers, then to place the video file in their Timeline from there.

I assumed that's what this Poster was doing. Even though he didn't say.
