Generically Speaking

Post by DiscCoasterPro »

Hi everyone. I am currently registered with Uleads VS 8 + 9 as well as DVD Workshop. I've been a forum member for a while and very much VALUE the opinions of its users . Ken and Steve have helped me understand lots of program concerns early on.

I admit, that I have "semi" jumped ship for a while based on my needs for multiple timelines. (btw, the program I jumped to sure is not without issues).

At any rate I was very pleased to see VS10 seemingly has added additional video timelines that ( I assume) will work as layers. This is tempting me, to purchase VS10.

I have a question that I would like to ask "generically speaking", since it the ONLY thing holding me back from adding another NLE to my computer. The question is regarding codecs. I wish they were installed and called by each individual NLE program from the programs folders, but I do believe they are all dumped in some common Windows System folder.

Finally ..this generic question LOL ... What risks are there relative to the performance / stability of existing NLE programs on a computer system, by installing yet another Editing Software to the computer? I would really rather not, uninstall what I currently have until I can change my workflow as time allows.

I'm in a situation now where (knock on wood) everything works. The only issue I can imagine even remotely possible as potential system instability is this codec conflict thing I'm envisioning. I keep my video editing computer off line and use seperate HDs for projects. I try to guard against "Murphy's Law" as much as possible, so I ask this question as its better to be safe than sorry!

If anyone could enlighten me as to how these codecs interact and what potential (if any) problems there may be, with multiple NLE applications installed, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks all! :)

I use GHOST to make a backup image of my "C" drive on a regular basis. This allows me to restore when needed (you can also try the Windows checkpoint method, but I don't think it's as foolproof).

On a side note, I have one machine with VS9, VS10, MSP7, MSP8, DWS1.x, DWS2.x, MF3, MF4, MF5 all installed and no problems.

Additionally, that machine has a few other NLE's (trial downloads), as well as full NLE's (full versions of software), and DVD Authoring software.

I haven't had any issues so far with the Ulead applications (knock on wood), and the others I don't pay too much attention (at least the Trials anyways -- which some have already expired). The other "full" versions I have still work as usual, and I do have the "ghost image" to fall back on for the last few months...

Regards,
George

Thanks guys :) thats encouraging. I have on my system now Sonic DVDit, DVD Workshop, Power Director 5 Ulead VS 8 + 9. Adobe Premiere Elements, and Vegas 6. LOL .. I feel like I'm pushin it :)

I just wondered if there was some common concern for codec versions and such overwriting others already installed.

thanks!
