Importing from DVD

Post by SPJ29 »

I have been using DW2 for a few months now but when I tried to import video from an old DVD the software stops responding.

I know this because when I press CTRL,ALT + DEL , DW2 is not responding.

I am using Windows XP Pro.

One other thing can I open my old DW1 projects in DW2 or do I have re-create them all from scratch.

WS2 is now showing whiskers and the DVD import feature is not as good/reliable as more modern ones, such as MF4/MSP8. I'd suggest that you buy MF4 to use just for importing DVDs, then use WS2 for the rest. However, if you just want to copy your DVD, there is a host of freeware stuff to do that.

Of course, if the original DVD is copy-protected, WS2 will not allow it to be imported.

I dont see the point in getting third party software for importing dvds when the software I have says it does the job.

The dvds I would like to import are DVD Workshop 1 creations that I would like to update, so I know there is no copy protection.

Yes, it can do the job, but it does it badly.

The problem is that, when a DVD is created, the video is split up into VOB files, each with about 1 Gb of video. When you import a DVD into WS2, each VOB is converted separately into an MPG file (provided that the VOB file has no special attributes, you can sometimes do the same by simply changing the extension). With more modern software, such as MF4 or MSP8, importing from a DVD will give you a single MPG file, hence a single title, containing all the VOBs.

If you can live with all your imported MPG files as separate titles, well and good.

Rather than buying MF4 for only ripping a DVD, I suggest you use another tool that is free and does the same. There are several in the field. One that comes to mind is SmartRipper. This will import any title with all chapters or just the chapters you want. I use it all the time to rip DVDs of home recorded tv programs that I want to edit and put together under a menu driven DVD and without commercials.
