Importing video from DVD

Post by citrusboy »

Can someone please tell me whether it's possible to import video from DVD for editing in Visual Studio 10? I have home movies on DVD I want to edit. I tried downloading the trial version but the file was corrupt, and I haven't found references to this feature in searches.

Thanks.

Yes, it is a feature, and has been in previous versions of the program, back to VS8 at least, I think. In VS 10, as in VS9, the command is 'Insert DVD/DVD-VR' which you can get by rightclicking in either the library pane or in the timeline.

The other way people do it is by copying the DVD's VOB files to the hard disk and simply renaming them with the extension .mpg, since that is what they are. This should also work with the sort of discs you describe. I think the only time you have to be careful is with video cameras which use mini-DVDs instead of tapes. With some of those, you have to 'finalise' the disc before putting it in the DVD-reader of your computer.

The "rename" approach can work, but it has some limitations. Such as when the VOB hits the 1gb-size, it continues in the next *.vob file. By renaming them, you might experience a small glitch at the join spot.

Also, be aware that the Trial might not have Dolby Digital included -- so if your DVD's were recorded with DD audio, you might not be able to hear the audio with the Trial version (it is included in the recent VS10).
