Encode PCM to AC3

Post by didierrp »

I have some video files a little too big for DVD (around 4,6ghz) .I want burn each video on DVD .The files are video Mpeg2 and sound PCM 48 khz.To win a little space I want to encode the sound to AC3 but I don't want to recode the video Mpeg2. Is it possible with MovieFactory 5 ?

Many thanks

I would try it with a smaller TEST file in the Trial version (you might only be able to select mpeg audio if Dolby Digital is not in the Trial version).

Add it to the timeline, then hit the EXPORT button, then CUSTOMIZE option. Change the audio to the new format and let it go...

Yes but are you sure that MF5 don't recode the mpeg2 file during this task??

I tried it with a couple of test files, and it did not re-encode the video. My video was DVD compliant mpeg2. How were your mpeg2 videos created, and what are their attributes (duration, resolution, bitrate, framerate, etc.) :?:

How long is your video, how long did it take to generate the new file, and how fast is your machine?

Did the progress bar seem to move along quite quickly, or did it take a "long" time (times are relative to the above questions). But something that takes a long time is usually being re-encoded. Something that encodes rather "quickly" is just encoding the audio.

For instance, on a modern machine, lets say you took a 5 minute test clip. I would expect that to be generated in less than a 30 seconds (assuming no video re-encoding).

For 56 minutes of video mpeg2, MF5 take to generate the new file with AC3 sound about 15 minutes .Computer with centrino 1,8

That looks like no video re-encoding to me :)

If it re-encoded the video, it would have taken between 1 to 3 hours (just a guess -- not knowing how optimized your system is).

That's very good time.
Re-encoding the video for a 4+gig file would take hours to do.
You must have a fast Harddisk in that machine.

NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO I hope that I don't re-encode the video Mpeg2 but only the sound (PCM to AC3) it's the subject of my post!!!
The test file of 56 minutes is about 2,7 Ghz with bitrate 4,5 and sound PCM .
The computer is a simple laptop Toshiba centrino

In the custom mpg settings if you check the box Do Not Convert Compliant MPEG Files, your video shouldn't get rerendered.

You don't have this option when you "export a file"

On the page to export selected clips, select the gear on the bottom left of the page, This brings up the Project Settings page, ensure the box is checked for Do Not Convert Compliant MPEG Files.

I think you misunderstood.
George & my post are saying that your video IS NOT being re-encoded, only the audio.
Otherwise the conversion would take HOURS to perform.
