Why is that some desk-top recorded dvd-ram discs, (both fully or partially recorded) crash when importing, using MF? Recording is done at LP mode.
Any suggestions please. Thank you.

Thank you Steve.
System specification are as folows;
Pentium III, speed 700MHz, Memory 640MB, MF Disk creator 4,
Desk-top recorder Pansonic DMR55-E55, LGSuper Multi DVD Drive.
Computor C-drive: 15GB has the MF installed
" D-drive: 70 GB, where currently 12 projects are stored.
I record satellite/TV programmes on DVD-RAM discs. on LP mode, viz 4 programmes if they are about 55mts each. If they are about 27mts each I record 8 programmes on each disc.
Recorded RAM discs at any given time can be either not more than 230 mts or less than the full possible 240mts,
When I import, I succeed with some of the DVD-r 's. But with others it just freezes (annoyance). Sometimes to circumvent this problem I record on DVD-r, create iso files, burn and store on D drive- a long-winded way.
I tried Ulead 'help' but they gave many 'directions' but could not solve this
problem. Hope you could find the solution. Thanks

My first suspicion is the quality of the discs you are using.
Check the disc surface for dirt, fingerprints and other possible flaws.
I tend to steer clear of RW type discs except for testing purposes.
They are great when used soley in a set top DVD recorder which are specifically designed to use RW media.
I'm now on my 3rd DVD burner and still don't like RW type discs.
OK DVD RAM isn't strictly speaking RW but it's still something 're-useable.'
For a comparison between the different media types DVD RAM, DVD RW, DVD R see

Have you tried the update packs for DVDMF 4?
http://www.ulead.com/tech/dmf/dmf.htm
Also try the CD/DVD Engine Update Pack in the link.
And, you did not mention the RAM recorder you use, could you please let us know?
Hope this helps.

Many thanks Steve and H.T.
The ram discs are in good condition without finger blemishes or scratches.
There are few dust specks peppered sparsely which can be seen only by 6x magnification.
As a novice I did read widely about different media before I plunged for ram discs and I have been helped much by this forum to come to where I am. I have about 60 ram discs and I am discouraged bySteve's opinion of them. These discs were bought from no lesser source than Panasonic themselves.
My recorder is Panasonic DMR 55E and the burner is LG GSA-4160B.
Nevertheless I down loaded the CD/DVD engine update pack but no success.
Further research shows that ONLY almost fully or fully recorded ram discs
can be successfully imported but not less. even though there are some dust specks. Is it something to do with some obscure DISC CAPACITY reasons I wonder.
Any thoughts on the last para please. Thanks.

Hi,
Before starting a recording on the Panasonic Unit, completely re-format the dvd-ram disk. Don't just erase it.
Usually it's the reader in your machine that causes this problem to occur.
The best way to import dvd-ram is from a unit that can read & write dvd-ram disks.
The workaround is COPY the contents of the dvd to the harddisk and then import the videos from the harddisk.
I was having similar problems using a "Lite-On" dvd-ram reader.
I replaced that with a "Maddog" dvd-ram reader/writer which works.
Also Sonys new Triple format dvd reader/writer works on my sytem for importing the dvd-ram disks recorded on the panasonic dvd recorders.
Other problems that can be generated is the "Fit To Disc" feature in these recorders. That may give you trouble. There is also an option in the setup menu of the panasonic recorders that says "Fixed" or "Variable" Recording. You may want to change that to "Fixed" to tell the unit to use a "Fixed/Mode" FrameSize.
When I use my recorder in the LP mode the videos were being created at 352x480 and some where 352x240.
I thought the LP mode was 352x480 and EP mode was 352x240.
I read an article on videoguys from a person that says if you have a panasonic recorder to go into the setup menu and change the settings from variable to fixed so the units don't try to automatically change the framesize. He claims those settings aren't for the bit-rate but are for changing the framesize automatically.
*This doesn't apply the SONY DvdRecorders. The Fixed/Variable in the Sony recorders DOES refer to fixed/variable bit-rates.
When copying the dvd to the harddisk copy to a NTFS partition.
A FAT32 partition may have a 2 gig limitation with those type files.
When importing discs always import to a NTFS partition.
So also make sure IF importing to make your working folders ((Preferences (F6key)) pointing to NTFS partitions because at 2 gigs importing the dvd the import process will fail.
Hope this helps,
etech
