MF5 HD DVD output settings

Post by CochiseGuy »

I'm impressed Ulead already supports burning HD DVD file folders. I have a Toshiba XA1 HD DVD and am looking forward to converting some of my HDTV recordings (from a Fusion3 Gold HDTV capture card) into DVD in HD resolution which the Toshiba can read.

But, why does MF5 only support HD output in 1080? A lot of U.S. broadcasts are only in 720p, which is also a valid HD DVD format. MF5 wants to spend hours "upconverting" my 720p mpegs to 1080, which is totally unecessary - the final result may fill the screen more, but no upconversion is ever going to have a higher resolution than the original content. The "user defined" settings in the output settings seems to be disable. Any chance of adding 720p output in the near future?

Also, probably asking alot from a $50 software, but H.264 Mpeg4 output would be teriffic!

Movie Factory 5 will output HD video at different sizes, just load your video on the time line and output the video it should retain the properties of the input file.

You can also check the settings before output by selecting the gear on the lower left side of the screen, you can customize the settings by selecting custom, this is when you have the video ready to output.

If you use MF5's capture module you shouldn't have any problems, however, if you use the Dvico software to capture your video it has to be converted. Read this thread:

Thank you for the info, the thread concernign the Dvico software was especially useful.

But perhaps I did not make it clear in my previous post - when I click on the "gear" and select "custom", it does not allow me to define user settings; it is "grayed out". The only choices availble are in "standard" - 1440x1080 or 1920x1080. I would like to use custom setting to set the output to the same format as the HD mpeg - 1440x720, 59.94 fps (720p).

I'm still using the trial version - are custom settings only available in the licensed version?

I noticed that the custom settings only allows you to change to 1440 or 1920, I haven't played around with the settings to see if I could change the size in a different place.

720p is actually 1280x720 59.97fps.

Yes, of course; thanks. Too many numbers too early in the morning.

Thanks for checking on the settings options.

I've noticed in MF5 that the 1280x720 is available setting the project to Blu-Ray.

Try changing your project to Blu-Ray and not HD-DVD.
You should be able to choose the 1280x720 framesize then.
Create a iso file on the harddisk (if your's isn't greyed out).
Just make sure the iso file isn't larger than the dvd your burning.

It's said that the HD-Video iso burned to a dvd will play in the Tosiba units.
Maybe the Blu-Ray will to. Don't know. Worth a try.

The Sony Playstation 3 unit is supposed to come out in November and they are saying it can play HD-Video & Blu-Ray HD disks. Expensive though.

What version of MF5 are you using???????

My version, a trial version DL's last week only has HD DVD, DVD, VCD & SVCD choices for disc output. And no, a BluRay disk structure would not play on a HD DVD and Sony's PS3 or any Sony hardware will not pay HD DVD. That's why they are calling it a "format war". Sony wants to kill HD DVD dead in its tracks.

HD DVD is an extension of the DVD format, with a HDVTS folder instead of VTS, and has EVO (Enhanced Video Object) instead of DVD's VOB files. BluRay is a completely different disk structure.

But thanks for your reply & suggestions. I'm going to try to use the MF5 to record on my Fusion3 card instead of the Dvico software and see if that helps. Even the 1080i Fusion recordings are showing up as 1088i in MF5, forcing it to want to re-code them and strip out the extra 8 lines - which don't show up anywhere except in MF5.

I don't know what your Fusion card or your Movie Factory 5 are doing if you actually get 1088i. I just captured some HD Video from my Dvico and Movie Factory 5 modules and get 1920x1080 frame size, data rate from Dvico is 16992 and 16000 for MF5.

The Blue Ray option was only in the very first version of the TYBY and Retail download version of MF5, Blue Ray support was taken out, because the final format for the disk hasen't been settled on yet. Even at that after your last post I tried different ways to get 720p and the Blue Ray selection lets you select 1280x720, however when you switch to HD DVD format you can only select 1440 or 1920.

I tried to export a HD clip 1440X1080i to 1280x720, it actually gave me a 4:3 screen at HD data rates. I tried to change the frame rate to 59.97 and the export bombed with an can't perform operation. I imagine you could save the video if it was actually in 720p format.

MF5 is supposed to have a burning pack as a download as soon as the disk formats are finalized.

It was only 720p broadcast recordings made with the Dvico software that I was trying to get MF5 to output to HD DVD without recoding, not convert anything to 720p. And it was Dvico software recordings of 1080i broadcasts that were showing up in mF5 as being 1088i. AViCodec shows them as being 1080.

I'm going to try your suggestion and use MF5 instead of Dvico software to record the 1080i broadcasts of "The Unit" tonite, using my Fusion3 Gold card, and see if that works.

Thanks for all your suggestions. :D
