TRUE HD???

Post by MRG »

Hi everyone!

I'd like to know, just how am I supposed to create true HD video files now that I have HD 16:9 videos? I mean, there are no such options to save the edited video as:
- HD 1280/720
- HD 1920/1080
... in any of the options. I've tried to setup custom templates with custom sizes, but the program doesn't even allow me to change Mpeg2 format to any larger than 720/480, and Mpeg4 can't be changed either to larger than that.

So, how am I supposed to create TRUE HD templates that can be used to create TRUE HD video files with my TRUE HD video tapes?

Thanks for any useful advice!

PS: I'm using Video Studio 10 Plus for particularly HD editing and creation, but now it appears that I won't be able to do just that... :-(

You can construct high definition templates in 10+ by clicking on Tools menu/Make Movie Manager

In this window, press the NEW button, enter a name template and select Mpeg if you want an Mpeg template or select AVI if you want to use something like a Divx codec.
Hit OK and the Template Options window opens,
Compression tab, select Mpeg2 compression, Video Bit Rate: Variable, 25000kbps
If you selected AVI in the first step, instead of Mpeg2, you can then select a Divx, or Xvid or H.264 codec etc. and continue to set the relevant properties for that codec.

General Tab: select a video frame size such as 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 and set the Field Order (e.g., Upper Field First for Sony HC1 video or Frame-Based if you are going to deinterlace. Close it out and you are in business. You will see your new template name in the Create Video File opening menu, for example. :D

I will try to put together an HD10+ tutorial ASAP and post it on this forum.

John:

That doesn't work, I'm not sure whats wrong but I haven't been able to create a mpg HD template since day one.

Edit:

Just figured it out, you have to select Tools, Make Movie Manager, Add, Create a Template name, and select a HD file. The properties of the HD video will show in the template.

Terry,
There are differences between NEW and ADD, which I haven't sorted out.

However, the NEW button provides a way to select either Mpeg or AVI, which is the way to get to other codecs and to manually set ALL the properties.

The ADD button lets you select a file and extract its properties into the template. It probably should be renamed because it is actually CLONEing or INHERITing the properties.

The labels are quite misleading and will trip up lots of new users.

That doesn't work.

Hi!

That's just the problem. I know how to create new templates, but in the setup, in Mpeg format and Mpeg-4 format the setup utility does not allow you to set custom settings for HD parameters! It only shows the "Standard" options with 720/480 being the highest value and the Customs are unavailable.

I've also tried to create an AVI - DivX template for 1920/1080 HD, but when I tried to render the clip, it showed an error message that it can not do the job.

So, my problem is not with the "how to set-up a template", but with the fact that neither in Mpeg nor in Mpeg-4 can I set my own "custom options" because the program itself does not allow settings beyond the 720/480.

But as much as I can determine, nobody ever used such settings as 1920/1080 and pretty much everybody is happy with the 720/480.

I'm just a little bit disappointed, because this 10+ version was advertised specifically as a "TRUE HD" editing software, which is not!

Other than that, I find it very good. Somewhat limited, but good. Especially for the price.

MRG is having the same problem as I am having with trying to get a frame size larger than 720 and a bitrate over 9696 when trying to make a new template. Add is the only way I can get a HD template into the Make Movie Manager.

MRG,
I am able to dial up 25000Kbps when Mpeg2 is selected in the Compression Tab. You probably have one of the DVD templates selected, which will not let you push up the bitrate.

When the Mpeg2 compression is selected, I see 1920x1080, 1440x1080,1280x720, etc on the Frame Size dropdown on the General Tab.

Try again - setup is tricky and counterintuitive.

The Divx situation is bizarre. I am suddenly unable to select the Unconstrained Profile, which is the whole key to frame sizes over 1280x720. Thinking that my latest Divx update had a bug, I rolled back to earlier versions of the Divx codec, which had worked well with VS9 - still no go. A quick check of the Divx forum shows no complaints about missing Unconstrained Profile, so I am still working on this one.

Re Mpg4, the supplied Ulead codec has never supported frame sizes over 720x480.

OK, Here is the poop on Divx: When you download the "Divx Create Bundle" (www.divx.com) you get 6 months free trial of the "Divx Pro" codec, which is the one that supports the Unconstrained Profile - the key to 1920x1080 frame size. My trial period ran out recently and, with no other notification or warning, the Unconstrained Profile no longer appeared as a choice in the Divx config window.

After I renewed, 1920x1080 reappeared as a choice. :D

Hi All,

I do not have any problem selecting 1920x1080 under MPeg2 option. However, after selectging MPeg2, I cannot selct Dolby Audio anymore. The only option is MPeg2 Audio.

Am I missing something? Can we have a HD template with Dolby audio format?

Re Audio - same here. I can't select anything but mpeg layer 2. However, that is the format used for the original sound encoding of the HC1 - so, the good news is that rendering will be faster if you don't reincode the audio. :D

However, there are about 13 sound encoding options if you use the Divx 6.2.1 codec. I don't see Dolby or AC3 mentioned explicitly. is there another name for Dolby?

Dolby on HD Video Projects

Post by jchunter »

I just noticed that in the File menu: Project properties/Edit/Ulead Video Studio Tab you can select Stereo (default) or "Multi Channel Sound." When you select the latter, you can then select SHARE/Create Video File/Custom/Options/ Compression Tab and voila - Dolby appears as an audio choice for Mpeg HD files :D

Edit: Whoa. Stop the presses. I should have completed the property setup because the Dolby choice disappears as soon as I select Mpeg2 as the compression. Sorry Guys... :(

Maybe we can hack the ini files to let Mpeg2 template permit Dolby...
