VideoStudio 10 Plus MPG 1 CODEC??

Post by Eric VS9 »

MPG 1 VCD
I have a trial version of VS 10 plus
I have created a MPG 1 and VCD file (not a VCD disc)
when played back on the computer using windows media player on the
same computer as VS 10 Plus is installed on it work as usual, all good

If I take the same file and play it back on a different computer using
windows media play ( a computer that does not have video studio 9 or 10 installed)
windows media player will not play it (CODEC ERROR)

if I make the same files on my 2nd computer from VS9
(10 plus is not installed on this system) it will play fine on the
other computer with no video studio installed using windows media player
did something happen in version 10 with the CODEC ??

??VS9 CODEC for MPG 1 is fine VS10 Plus is not ??

We had an almost identical query here just a few days ago. And the response is the same. As far as I am aware, Video Studio does not install an mpeg-1 codec at all. That is installed natively by Microsoft as part of the Windows XP DirectShow Runtime set up. (I also have another mpeg-1 codec installed by my analogue capture card.) So I am at a loss to explain your problem since -- in theory at least -- both VS9 and 10 use exactly the same codec, and it is not a Ulead/InterVideo codec in the first place.

You might want to do a Google search for either Sherlock or GSpot, which are freeware tools which will show you all the video and audio codecs on your computer(s) and their makers.

STOP PRESS: Before posting this, I thought I would do an experiment and try to replicate your problem. I have VS10+ on my main computer (as well as VS9), and on another computer (my Dell laptop) I have only VS9. As luck would have it, I also have an old clunker third computer, which is too slow for any video editing so has no version of Video Studio on it. All three computers, however, run XP Pro, and have Windows Media Player 10. All three also all show the same Microsoft mpeg-1 codec.

Using VS10+ on my main computer, I converted a 10 minute DV/AVI file with audio (consisting of the original audio, plus voiceover plus added music) to VCD/mpg-1, as you did. It plays well, including audio, on my main computer's Windows Media Player 10, as well as in Cyberlink's PowerDVD 7 (and of course the preview window of VS10+). I transferred the file to my laptop, which as I say, only has VS9 on it. The file played just as well in WMP 10, PowerDVD 7 and VS9 on that computer, including full audio. Transferring it to my third computer (with no video editing software), however, WMP reported it did not have the correct codec to play the file.

I next made the VCD/mpeg-1 test file on my main computer, but this time using VS9. Same result as above.

I then made a separate VCD/mpeg-1 file on my laptop (which does not have VS10) using VS9. Very interestingly, apart from playing in both my main computer and laptop, it also plays perfectly well in the third old clunker.

So in fact VS10+ does seem to install something which interferes with VCD/mpeg-1 creation even when using VS9 on the same computer. But the question is: what? As I say, Gspot tells me I only have two mpeg-1 codecs on my main computer -- the Microsoft quartz.dll one installed with Windows and the one installed by my analogue capture card (Winfast DV2000 -- you don't happen to have one of those installed, do you?).

I will investigate further when I have time, and post back here if I find any results.

Same MPG1 problem for me

Post by phil38555615 »

I can confirm exactly the same problem. However, the mpg1 seems to play okay with Quicktime.

This needs to be sorted.

When you go to the "custom settings" before saving as mpg1, the only codec listed there for me is a Ulead one, which I haven't noticed on my system before.

WOW this is a problem, I am glad it not just me...
The only problem is now to get the 20 CDs I made
for a client back. And what do I say sorry I used
a trial version of a brand new video editing
program...
Lesson Learned

Also is there a file or CODEC I can copy from version 9
into the version 10 ulead folder ?

i was the one who posted days ago about the same problem that Eric was having...

Phil: it works! it works! :D gee, i didn't know that quicktime can play mpegs so it never occured to me to try opening my file with a different media player. thanks so much! this is an easier solution than racking my brains out finding which freaking missing codec i have to download

Using Quicktime is a work-around and not a solution, particularly to those people who either do not have it on their computers or those who do not want it. Mind you, we may be talking about a relatively small group of people who fit into either of these categories AND who are still using the VCD format. But still, it is a problem and one which Ulead needs to sort out. At the very least, just about every PC user with XP will have either WMP 9 or 10 on their computers; whereas the same cannot be guaranteed for Quicktime.

Indeed, when you choose Customise in Share > Create Video File, and set it for VCD, the Encoder Driver is shown as Ulead MPEG.Now -- though IIRC this is what was always shown... Or was it? :?: :?: The mystery deepens when you go to Tools > Change Capture Plug-in where the relevant mpeg one is described as Ulead DSW MPEG Capture Plug-in -- though this time I am sure it has not changed name since at least VS7.

But I also remain fairly convinced that whatever they are called, they would still be using the Microsoft mpeg-1 codec quartz.dll.

What is more, neither GSpot nor Sherlock display any codecs from Ulead at all; and both display three from InterVideo, two of which are mpeg-4 and the third is a YUYV.

And thereby possibly hangs a tale. I cannot help but wonder whether Intervideo's takeover of Ulead last year may have resulted in the use of Intervideo drivers or other software which may have produced this problem with mpeg-1 output from VS10+ (and it seems, with any other version of VS which may be installed on the same computer alongside VS10+). It may be time for one of our moderators to approach Ulead in the hope of an answer or fix.

I have un installed version 10 (trial) then tried to create VCD MPG1
and it would not play in windows Media Player on a system with Version 10 installed
I have since re installed VS9 Full and I still get the same results
I have also tried System Restore from the point before the install the trial version of VS10
no luck
