Where did the video come from? If it came from another source (i.e. you did not capture it direct with VS8 SE), the one possibility is that it has Dolby audio, which VS8 SE will not be able to handle at all. The full version of VS8 could do so with a US$30 plug-in (though frankly, if that were still available, it would be better to spend the extra money to upgrade to VS10+). You can also try downloading the free Dolby/AC-3 filter here http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AC3_Filter if you think that video you are trying to import has Dolby audio. That filter will at least allow you to import the audio, though it will then be converted to either LPCM or mpeg audio for you final output.

many thanks, your quick response ... it's not unusual for me to get no help on these sites ... so, have already got that filter .. but a fuller explanation is this ... yesterday I crashed the computer out and had to reload (it's the 6 monthly housecleaning) I reloaded verything as usual but had to reload VideoStudio 3 times to get it to settle in ... the video - which is on my hard drive - was working fine - I was halfway through editing - now when I import the video I get no sound at all .. picture is perfect and old edits are in place .. even when I change to video file it still has no sound .. obviously I've loaded something out of sequence or I've forgotten some setting .. it's a pearler of a problem .. any further help would be appreciated

thanks for the help .. I have reloaded the program another couple of times and now it's working .. one of those mysteries of life ... still if you've got the time to answer one more question ... is there any way of setting a time limit for importing a video from the vhs/camera?

I don't think you can with VS -- you can only do it manually by actually switiching off the capture after the requisite time. However, if you use the little freeware DV capture program -- WinDV -- you can set a limit of files size in frames. Given that you are in Australia and thus use PAL video at 25 frames per second, it is a simple mathematical calculation to work out how many minutes (and thus seconds) you want the file to be, and then multiply by 25. You then set the resulting number of frames as the limit in WinDV.
