Some DVDs are missing sound

Post by dazed »

I am using a full version of DVD Movie Factory 4.0 to burn copies of the BBC program Hustle (I missed it when it originally aired) that have been downloaded from the internet/

The files are avi at around 712Mb each, runtime of around 57 mins and the avi files work perfectly when watched on my PC.

The first two episodes burned and worked fine. The next two that I tried seem to burn ok, however when I try them in any of my DVD players (including my PC), there is no sound.

I have not changed any settings in the software and the only differences I can find within the file properties is that "Audio Sample Size: 16 bit" is mentionned for the files that produce no sound. Does this relate to some sound preference that MF4 does not support?

The only other visible difference is the Video Sample size is 24 bit for the files that do not work and 12 bit for the files that do. Is this affecting something?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

AVI does not tell the whole story. AVI is a "container" format that can contain DV, MPEG-2, etc. I suspect that your files are DivX or Xvid (which use MPEG-4 compression.) The audio in the AVI container is probably MP3.

Some users have reported trouble with MP3 audio. (Probably from a non-conforming, unlicensed MP3 encoder.) If you can confirm that your audio is MP3, you can try searching the forum for "MP3"... Maybe somebody has found a solution.

The video compression is XVID and the Audio Format is MPEG Layer-3. The Audio encoder is Moonlight Odio Dekoda.

These properties are the same for both the files that produce sound and the files that do not with the only two exceptions being noted in my original post.

You need to convert Xvid / DivX or MPEG4 files to DVD compliant MPEG2 beforehand.
There are quite a few free converters available.
Try "Super" which can be found in our links to free stuff

I was full of enthusiasm following such a positive and swift response (thanks sjj), however I am no nearer getting the sound to work on this file.

The super software is...well.... SUPER. A great little utility. I converted the Xvid avi file into an "mpg (Mpeg II)" which automatically selected mp2 as the default audio codec (or should I be selecting AC3 as the audio codec?)

I even tried removing and reinstalling MF4 which had no effect. I also reburned a copy of one of the files that did produce sound and it still does, so I am sure the Ulead software has not become corrupt.

I am starting to think it is something about the number 3. I burned the first two episodes of LOST and they worked fine. I tried burning episode 3..... NO SOUND!

Hi

I am having the same problem.

I think its somthing to do with the original file. The "Xvid.xor.avi" files dont have any audio after I burn them to DVD and the "Xvid.lol.avi" have the audio.

I am using MF4.
Gspot says that the audi and video codecs are installed. I have found the differences between the xor and the lol files are :

"xvid.xor.avi" :48000Hz 128 kb/s total (2 chnls) LAME3.95
CODEC 0x0055(MP3, ISO) MPEG-1 Layer 3
"xvid.lol.avi" :48000Hz 125 kb/s total (2 chnls) LAME3.96
CODEC 0x0055(MP3, ISO) MPEG-1 Layer 3

For using XviD video, you need to convert it to other video formats first as dazed did.

Check http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?p=63327 also.
