Switching back & forth between 2 synced sources

Post by jwolf »

Hello everyone,

I have installed the trial MSP8 and I am having some trouble figuring out the best way to switch back and forth between 2 syncronized video streams from 2 different cameras. I come from a Premiere 6 background. Normally I would put one clip on the A track and the other on the B track and then transition back and forth. Is there any EASY way to do that in MSP8? Lots of times I need to take audio off of both video streams also. In Premiere I could do fades back and forth on them anytime I wanted to without changing the video displayed.

The only thing I had to do was about every 30 minutes of video or so I might have to re-sync the clips slightly from them drifting apart.

Is there any way to do what I am talking about? If not then I might not be able to use it for half of my videos.

I do like some other features it has but if I can't syncronize 2 video tracks, that would probably keep me from getting it.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

There are perhaps a dozen different ways to do this.
Here's one.
Place the video from camera 1 on video track 1.
Place the video from camera 2 on video track 3. Mute the sound from Video track 3.

Using the scissors tool cut away the bits of camera 2 tht you do not want.
Now on playback you will see camera 1, but wherever camera 2 footage remains, camera 2 will be displayed. As this stands you will cut from one to the other.

To achieve a transition effect from one to the other, follow the method supplied by Terry Stetler here:

(If you do not want transition effects but simple straight cuts then you could place the footage from camera 2 on video track 2.)

There are other methods.
There is an article included in a grossly underpriced book

I agree with the above but add another tip or two. If you want to see the underlying clip, click the solo icon. Pressing U will cut the selected clip(s) at the playhead position (if none selected, all clips). You may wish to split the master audio track from the video and lock it. Keep the secondary one during editing to ensure synch (the 2 cams may run at slightly different speeds and you may need to make adjustments). I second the recommendation of Charlie Hills' book; the chapter in question tells you how you can see previews of both cams side-by-side (too long for a forum reply).

Hitting the F5 key during playback to add cue points where you want to make the cuts may work as well. Playback continues after you hit the key, so you don't have to stop/start every time you want to make a cut.
