Just to set scenario of what I do a lot of.
I copy films via a Freeview Digibox on to my hard drive using Pinnacle Studio 9 as an avi file.
I then edit the film to remove any unwanted footage at the beginning and end and also any adverts. I would say, on the side of caution, it will take about 3 hours to render a two hour film to a dvd compatable file.
I then use Movie Factory to create a dvd, burning to folders. As, in the main, I do not create a menu, this takes about 15 minutes. I burn the folder then to dvd using Nero. Maybe a little long winded but I dont have any problems using the method above. In fact, I do occasionally use an external usb 2 drive with no problems.
If I record using a stand alone dvd recorder, I can usually take about half an hour to transfer from the dvd into Videostudio, edit, create the dvd file and then create the dvd ready to burn in between 30 and 40 minutes.

I am thinking that I would abandon miniDV
Looks like a painful process...I am seriously thinking of switching to a DVD-based camcorder now. Any down side?
