Help with surround sound in VS10+

Post by TubaDad »

I am trying to figure out how to handle each track individually in the Surround Sound Mixer, but they all seem to be tied together, and one change affects all tracks.

A simplified version of what I am trying to do is to have each of the sound sources (video, overlay, voice and music tracks) to come out of a different speaker.

The mixer looks like it should be able to handle them individually, with the different "balls" for the different tracks, but it looks like each time I move one, whether I have the clip or project selected, that they all move together. Which really isn't giving the surround sound control I expected. At this point, I am assuming I just have not figured out exactly what I need to do yet.

All new features come with that learning price tag.

TubaDad,

I'm with you I can't figure out how you steer the separate channels.

I'm afraid the training on this in the manual is either inadequate or there is a bug in the software!

Yes the manual is really lacking in describing how to use the 5.1. ..

However to accomplish this you must

1. Be in Timeline view.
2. Have 5.1 enabled (clicking on the 5.1 icon)
3. Highlight the track that you want to stear, by clicking on the Icon for the track, the reel(s), mic, or music notes. The stearing button should change to match the track.
4. Now move the button in the 5.1 mixer to where you want it.
5. Click on another track icon. Notice the button changes. Move it to the position where you want your sound.

Now when you click on a track icon, and playback your clip, you should see that the button remains where you put it.

Trouble is Ron it doesn't seem to work like that - if you set up the first track to one loudspeaker then go to the second track and send that to a different speaker - when you go back to the first track it now shows it going to the second speaker as well.

as an experiment just keep selecting tracks and moving the play button to a different speaker - every track you choose will be showing your last selection - it does not appear to be possible to direct different sound tracks to different speakers.

Brian,

I know what you are referring to. Before posting, I ran a test, however just used a video on the main track, and an audio clip from the library. I set the video clip audio to play from the right front speaker, the audio track to play from the left rear. When I first went back and clicked the video track it appeared as if the audio had reset to the center. So I again drug the button to the right front. I then clicked on the audio, and it appeared to reset. So I drug it off to the left rear.

Now however when I clicked on the Video Track, highlighting it, then clicked on the Play button, or the Preview, low and behold the pan/stearing button in the mixer was where I had put it. So I stopped the playback, clicked on the audio track, clicked Play or Preview and the Audio was where I had placed it.

Prior to pressing Play or Preview the pan/stear buttons were in the dead center of the mixer. But once pressing play, they shown to be where I had drug them. So as far as I can tell, for me anyway it is working like it should.
