I have recently bought an Canopus mpeg pro encoder, it came with Ulead 1.2SE. It has a USB2 connection. I am wanting to do some simple video transfering from my old vhs tapes and add chapter points and add a title to my video project. I also own Roxio Media Creator 7. With this program I can plug my digital video recorder into my computer via firewire, add chapter points automatically then add the title and then burn. It is basically a three step process that I can do in one sitting at the beginning of the project. Now what I would like to know if I can do is put a vhs tape in the vcr that is plugged into my encoder cature in mpeg2 format with the audio in dolby digital compression and create the chapter points automatically with Ulead. I have opened my file in Roxio but it seems that it wants me to author it before burning and this takes along time. It seems that I have to add chapter points manually in Ulead, I would be satisfied if I could just do that part in Ulead and would use that program.
Thanks for any help.
Ernie
can I plug and burn?
Yes.
Well, you still have to "author", but you don't have to do anything other than click the various preferences unless you want to. Chapters & menus are optional.
I tried the automatic chapter detection, but it didn't work very well with my source material. Lately when I want something "quick & dirty", I'll put a chapter-point about every 5 minutes... I'll just skip-ahead and find a good spot (but maybe not the "right" spot) for a chapter. This seems to take me about a half-hour for a 90 minute program.
I've never used a source file with AC3 (Digital Dolby) already encoded, but I think it's supposed to work. I've always let Workshop do the AC3 encoding. I don't think the trial version comes with the AC3 encoder, but it should work if your files are already AC3 encoded.
BTW - Ulead Video Studio can author simple DVDs. DVD Workshop is for more advanced DVD authoring: Fancy menus, multiple sountracks, subtitles, etc.,
You might check-out Movie Factory too. (I found it too limited.)
Of course, you can download trial versions of all the programs, or you can order a CD with the trial versions of everything for $8.00. You can download the user's manuals separately.

Workshop won't do that. It can cut & splice, but to do any real video editing, you need a video editor (Video Studio, etc)....then add the title...

Thanks for replying DVD Doug, I am missing something, maybe that is why I am having so much trouble. This is my process- I capture a video from vhs from encoder, save to hard drive, open Ulead go to start open new, name my project, open file that was saved, then skip the edit and go right to menu. At this point my only options are create a standard menu blank, create a standard menu from template or go to finish w/o creating menu. If I choose either of the latter I don't see any place to adjust chapter points. please tell me I am doing something wrong and not that I have to upgrade. I am finding this program very hard to work with compared to others but I would like to use it since it came with my hardware and is quick to burn.
Thanks
Thanks

Chapters..............
Hi, the answer to setting up chapters is in you last post " I then skip the edit ".....
The EDIT step is where you set up the chapter points !, either by scene detection or by fixed duration.
May I suggest you have a look at the help files in DW they really are quite useful..

Click the EDIT tab.
Open the video file
Drag the thumbnail into the time-line
The "Create Chapter" button will be grayed-out 'till you advance the video beyond the first frame. (That had me stuck for a while!) Advance the video by playing it, or by entering the time. Pause at the frame where you want to add the chapter, then click Add-Chapter.
You add chapters in the EDIT window before you create a menu. (You can skip the menu tap altogether.)
Assuming that you have the Demo version... Did you realize that you can Download the User's Manual? (I didn't.)
TITLES - I was thinking... you could create a simple menu (one button = PLAY) that functions as a title page. You can set it to time-out and automatically start the video after 5 seconds or so. Your title-text could even be the play button!
A couple of things I haven't tried... A "title" meu with no buttons that times-out & plays the video. Or, a still title-slide inserted before (or between) video clips. You'd need to slide image with another program. I haven't made a "slide show", but I assume you can alternate slides & video clips.
BTW - After I realized that Movie Factory wasn't going to work out for me, I bought Video Studio ($100) and the Special Upgrade Version of DVD Workshop Express ($150). This way, it was only $50 more for Video Studio.
I'll use as many as six different programs to copy a VHS tape to a DVD:
Video Capture
Video Edit
DVD Author & Burn
Scan Packaging Artwork
Crop & Edit Artwork Images
Generate & Print Artwork

DVDDOUG,
Thanks again, this is all starting to make sense now. I did try to download the user manual from the link you posted and got a 404 error. I have one more question, when I go to burn my project it says that "some menus or titles are not linked" and "some menus do not contain any valid button". I have tried to add buttons and am not understanding how the process works. I could not find my question in the help files. When I set my chapter points on my title page do I drag buttons to the thumbnails? When I have tried this it says that "objects contain navigation attributes that already owned by other existing objects". If you can get me through this step I think I am on the road to understanding the program where I can reallly work with it and possibly upgrade.
Thanks again.
