Dolby Digital 5.1 encoder

Post by Kaledi »

Firstly apologies if this has been discussed previously, I'v done a couple of searches, but haven't found anything (I've also just speent 24 hours travelling so am rather tired). Anyhow, I've just upgraded to version 10.0 plus version, with one facility that looked good was DD 5.1 encoder. I've done some testing today and it does not appear to be what I was expecting; I was expecting that VS would be able to take a stereo source and encode a surround sound soundtrack, especially for stereo tracks that contain a prologic soundtrack (e.g. a tv show). However, the first attempt I made resulted in just the left and right channels being encoded into the surround and centre channels. Clearly, there is a lot of flexibility to mix multiple soundtracks, but simply converting an analogue surround mix into DD 5.1, VS does not appear to be able to do this? I'm sure that many of you know that Nero 7 CAN do this and currently, if i really want a DD 5.1 mix, I have to use Nero to do a final encode, which is hardly an ideal workflow.
So the question is, can anyone shed some light on their experiences of using the 5.1 encoder and can I do as I wish with VS10?

Well, I didn't get my boxed VS10 software yet, so clearly I don't know what I'm talking about....

I don't think VS10 has a Pro Logic decoder or encoder. Does Nero? Maybe I need to get nero!

If you want to automatically convert matrix-encoded Dolby surround to 5.1 digital, it's not worth the trouble. Just let the Pro Logic receiver decode it at playback time. This also allows the viewer/listener to adjust the surround sound to their taste.

If you want to manually enhance or manipulate the surround sound, thats another story... If you want complete control of all six channels, you need 5.1 digital.
