DWS vs Movie Factory

Post by DiscCoasterPro »

Hello. I noticed a new version of DVD Movie Factory, I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to point out the differences between these programs, and what if any features are missing from either.

thanks

DVD Workshop is a specialized DVD authoring tool. It can make DVDs with multiple soundtracks (Express=2 max, full=8 max) and subtitles. You can also use a playlist to gain more control over what happens when you click a menu item.

DVD Movie Factory is not as "professional", but it's more multi-purpose. It can do some editing, and a few other things. It has been updated at least twice while Workshop has remained at version 2, so in some ways it's more advanced. (i.e. Movie Factory can make HD DVDs, and Workshop cannot.)

Really, the only way to compare is to download the trial programs (or order the trial CD) and try them. And, FYI - Video Studio can make DVDs too.... Just to add to the confusion.

Thanks Doug, I own DVD Workshop and I've been using it right along. I love the program but also would like to see an update.

I was looking at the new Movie Factory and it really was unclear which if any features overlapped each other.

I didn't see a play first video option in Movie Factory, maybe I missed that.

It seems as flexable with menu creating, but again unclear. Ulead has the comparison charts but only compares within product type and at that the list of yes'es and no's are different. :)

Im also registered with Video Studio 8, and 9 and had to leave the program for extra timeline tracks. Now it seems Ulead has incorporated more so I am considering upgrading to Vers. 10 of VS.

While looking at that, I did notice Movie Factory 5 (while hoping for WS3)

It seems Movie Factory won't let you select what will happen after a menu choice as Workshop does with the playlist. Its just confusing. I downloaded the Movie Factory manual but as you say working with it is the best way.

Ya know, my biggest fear is installing NLEs and Authoring programs and having codecs corrupt the applications I currently use, so I hesitate to download too many trials. :)

thanks for all input!
