previews are playing back poorly! what do I do?

Hey all. I'm trying to edit a music video (quick cuts, etc) and I'm losing lots of frames and cuts and such. What do I need to do to see my edits played back correctly?

We need you to give us many details of exactly what your settings are, when you capture. Have a look at the first post in this forum, to see what details are needed. Then we can help you better.

With a system like that you should be capturing in AVI, maybe mpeg if your uisng the VCD standard. MPEG capture is very CPU intensive and has to be done on the fly, unless your using a hardware encoder.

VIDEO CATURE FORMAT
MPEG1 OPTIMAL QUALITY
AUDIO MPEG1 LAYER 2
If your going to capture to MPEG you should match whatever your final output is going to be. If your outputting to DVD or VCD the only mpeg1 settings that you can use are the VCD standard. Also note that the VCD standard is a relativly low bitrate and will produce no where near what you can using mpeg2 at a higher bitrate. I suspect this is where your macro blocking is coming from.

Also previewing video on a computer monitor is not a very good way to judge how it looks. You need to burn some test footage. Get a RW and burn a few short clips, if possible ones with a lot of motion.

Check to see if your project settings match your video, if it doesn't it needs to be encoded to be previewed.

And don't rely on UVS' Preview window, render the project (or a portion of it) to the final output format and view that using a separate program such as Windows Media Player...
