icons on windows not displaying PI icon

Post by brucefl »

I have checked the settings and files assoc. with PI11 aren't showing the PI icon as in previous versions. The files will open ok, but I'd like to have it show the icon for PI as it has always.
If I open a folder any thing assoc. (.jpg, .bmp.) just shows the icon that windows doesn't know the assoc., though the program is right in the folder options?
thanks

I have the same problem, been trying every possible solution to get the icons work with associated files for PhotoImpact 11... I've set the right associations in the general settings of pi11 itself, I've tried every possible combination in the folder options (extention types) to link the files with either iedit.exe or iedit_.exe which is where the problem might be,

iedit.exe is photoimpact launcher and iedit.exe is photoimpact 11... within these exe files one can choose the icon, within iedit.exe theres only one icon (the nice looking round one) in iedit_.exe there are several icons including the one I think is ment to link/associate to files (a leaflet with bend corner and the nice round icon in the middle of it) choosing these icons works, BUT!...
When starting PI11 (either through iedit.exe or iedit_.exe) and using the browser manager it resets the icons within the browser and when looking in the same folder by using windows explorer you'll see the icons are being reset to the default icon which windows uses to display non associated files.

I've searched a few days now hours and hours... tried looking if windows itself was the problem, found some tips in editing the registry to a higher level of icon cache, this wasnt the solution, then trying another tip to delete iconcache.db (didnt help), changing the desktop display colors back and forth from 32bit to 16bit (didnt work), adjusting the size of the icons back and forth (didnt work)... I'm out of tips and solutions...

Every icon is working fine except for the ulead photoimpact 11 icons, double clicking them works fine but the icons will not be displayed as described above.

I guess the problem lies within using the browser manager and/or the (rather mysterious) "photoimpact launcher" and photoimpact 11 exe files,
I've seen several people having the same problem but no tips yet :(

Been searching the knowledge base and the faq (seems there are hardly and problems with pi11 in there while checking this forum seems to tell a whole different perspective) been searching google on many different search terms and to my surprise there is only 1 result on "photoimpact launcher" and it leads to this forum with no helpful information on the problem as well :(

I have been using photoimpact 8 before 11 and I had 8 still installed when installing 11 maybe thats where it went wrong? Have uninstalled and reinstalled 11 to see if that might be the fix but it didnt help as well...

I really hope someone can help us out :(

This issue is not happened on my system, I wonder if there is any other software in your system sets the file association to elsewhere. Maybe you can do some checks?

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your response (and quick response :D)

I found the solution (weird I didnt see this post earlier on with using the search button)
here:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=11774

It's a registry edit, a bit scary to do but it worked :D
I wonder if it's a software combination that caused this :?:
Should be a good one to make sticky I think?

will try it, only has happened in 11

Post by brucefl »

I will try it when Iget home, but I havnen't had
this file assoc problem since I started using since
PI 3, so I would assume it has to be a PI 11 problem?
I had 10 installed and recently uninstalled it after installing
10, I may go back and try reinstalling 11 see if this cure is.
Have tried all the suggestions in those post except modifying
the registry.

Yeah PI11 problem probably, I guess it's something we have in common the way we set up our system and the software installed but the registry edit works even after a few days now so it's the fix ;)

Fixed the problem (so far)

I uninstalled and reinstalled and associated the picture files. Have to change my .tifs over, hopefully that will work also.
Not sure if the problem is when v11 is installed over ver10 or not. I did the upgrade not the full insall. Even after uninstalling 10 didn't pic the icon assoc for 11, untill uninstalling and reinstalling.

I have had the dissapearing Icon or File Association happen several times during the years I have had PI and found that it stemmed from having a previous version installed, installing a new version, and then uninstalling the older version. The previous version deleted the keys, and so I had to put them back manually, or uninstall everything and reinstall all over again.

keeps happening

Post by brucefl »

I guess I will have to try the registry thing or email tech support, it keeps resetting to the default unassociated icon.

Which one is it suppose to use, the one for the launcher or PI one?

The Exe icon is diferent than the file association Icon. On the Folders Option\file Types when I hit the Restore button and then the Advance button, it highlights Iedit.exe and displays 25 possible icons for file association, which it will let you change. Hitting the Restore button puts all of the Icon associations back to default.

Post by brucefl »

Maybe I will try to uninstall and reinstall it once again. All I get is the one icon with the camera in it. But which program is default for PI11 launcher or the one for PI

icon problem/possibly between PI11 & PE8.6 when edit,fro

Post by brucefl »

I think I may have found what causes the problem with the file assoc. not sticking. Not sure if someone canduplicate it? I started by uninstalling PI11, and deleting all references of it in registry, then reinstalled it. I watched it for a several days with no problem, then decided to install the Update pack It has ran for several days.
Today, I had to edit some photo's so, I opened photo expl. 8.6 which came with PI11. Upon finding the particular picture(S) I right clicked and picked edit in photo impact. A short while later I looked into my "my documents folder" and found picture assoc. (.bmp, jpeg, even .ufo) icons all back to the windows unknown icon (although the clicking on the picture it still works)
Also until today, Photoimpact was always in the "open with" on right click, now photo launcher is in there, and I have lost PI11 in the "open with",
I believe there is something in PE8.6 that is causing the icon disassociation, when you have PE8.6 open in the preview window right clicking and editing in PI11?
I hope this helps in determining what the problem is? Have emailed tech support again with this thought?
