Project Settings & Preferences for Video/ Colour Filters

Post by Gra »

Hi Guys

Sorry if this is dumb (and I have gone through VE's help, etc), but in the project settings it has a tickbox for video filters. What does checking that box do exactly? Also, in preferences, it has a box in Edit to 'apply colour filter'. Does that do any real good in practice and what should I really expect from it (having tried it both checked and unchecked, I can't see much difference)?

Lastly, while I'm posing these kind of basic questions, I keep reading about smart render but I cannot fathom out where to find the checkbox to see if its on or off (I thought MSP 7 - or maybe VS8 had a box to actually check in preferences or project settings).
Thanks & regards.

TV has a limited range of colours because of the way the bursts are encoded. You cannot go from RGB 0,0,0 to 255,255,255 without some queer effects. PAL and NTSC have different colour rendering, as well. Applying the filter automatically converts "forbidden" colours to the nearest "allowed" ones.

If your input sources conform to the limitations (e.g., a DV file), there is no need to apply it. OTOH, if you have an, e.g., image file that is in 24 bits or higher, it is possible that some of the colours may be outside the permitted range and your resultant TV display will show some odd effects, such as reds which look solarised. In this case, the filter should be activated according to whichever system you are using. Because computer screens can show 24 bit of higher colour renderings, there is no need to apply the filters if you know the final video will be viewed ONLY on a computer.

This is one reason, amongst many, why it is a good idea to monitor on a TV while you are editing.

The Smart Render checkbox is when you Create a file.
