Firstly try running the installation program again and you will find a repair option.
If that fails please follow these steps:

Have you got a RAM test program? I ask because sometimes, that sort of error message is indicative that something might be going wrong with the RAM -- the installation program is trying to address an area of the RAM which cannot be read. Sometimes doing a simple re-boot will remedy the problem. But sometimes, when you test your RAM, you might find that one or more of the basic RAM routines returns an error message. If so, then you may have replace the RAM...

this is a brand new Vaio, I can't imagine any RAM issues. But if you could recommend a testing prog I'll certainly give it a whirl :) I am open to all suggestions at this point.

I currently use Pinncale for our video needs, however, it kills my system. Someone recommended Ulead so I'm rather anxious to try it out. I'll try anything at this point.

I Know The Problem:

I examined your system information and it appears you have no computer.

Please include more information about your system and what you were doing when you got the error.

Sorry -- but two years ago, I bought a brand new computer, and was having similar problems within a week of purchase. Downloaded the RAM test from Microsoft and discovered one of the brand new RAM sticks was defective. So it's not the age of the computer that matters, but the reliability of what went into it...

Agreed. I bought a new computer and literally within 1 hour of booting it up it crashed - turns out it had a bad RAM chip.

Another thing you can try is to turn off DEP for Videostudio:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance -> Data Execution Prevention. Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select", and add Videostudio to the list using the Add button.

First of all, thank you kindly for all of the responses. I appreciate your time and your help.

I ran the chkdsk and even afterwards, still no luck :(

Did the mem test and all was fine.

Turned off the DEP, still no luck.

My cohort in crime downloaded the trial and had no probs at all with it. This bites!

should I just surrender?

call the Tech Support...

Hi, camwithher,

Just so happens that I had a very similar problem with my VS9. After re-starting the computer, the program is working fine now. However, the VCD/DVD Disc Image Recorder doesn't work ever since...

I spoke to the Tech Support, but he couldn't suggest anything that I hadn't already tried. He also indicated that they wouldn't do anything unless they hear from enough people. Now, apparently, this user forum means nothing to them -- he actually admitted that they rarely read any messages because it is not "official". So, before giving up, why not try calling the Tech Support (in U.S., it's 510-979-7118)?

Wish you luck!

You say you have a Sony Vaio. Somewhere here there is a post, where the person was having problems burning or capturing and was also using a Sony Vaio.
Doesn't Sony Vaio come with some proprietary capturing software? I know they are very, very selfish with their hardware and firmware. I'll have to do some searching for that post. But I don't think we were able to resolve it, due to the proprietary nature of Sony's stuff...

EDIT

Well I ran down the post, it had to do with not being able to build a capture graph, so wouldn't apply here. The proprietary software I was thinking of was DV Gate, and I don't know if that may be causing problems with Ulead's programs.

You say your cohort did not have any problems, so what is different between your system and his? Since VS will run on his, it is an issue with your system. Since your computer is new, I suspect it is running WinXP (home or Pro? ). I'm also going to guess (since you have not completed your system specs in your profile), you have 512 megs of RAM, and maybe 1 gig. Does your cohort have an identical system as yours? (Sony Vaio)...
