Resizing of stills to correct for overscan when played on TV

Post by Mike B »

I have been using Pinnacle Studio 9 but have had a couple of issues with it that has me shopping for something better. I am currently checking out the trial versions of Ulead VideoStudio 10 and Adobe Premier Elements 2.
So far I like Ulead best. The only problem with Adobe is that video rendering times are about twice as long. Ulead did not include any help files so it is taking a little longer to try and learn. One thing I have not been able to find is a way to reduce the size of stills when needed to allow for overscan when played on the TV screen. Is this possible in Ulead VideoStudio 10?

If I am interpreting your problem correctly - I am having the same problem. When I view my stills (with titles) in the editing stage, all is ok, when I put it on DVD then view it on tv I l lose the top and bottom of my pictures -sometimes the lower half of titles when I have two lines. I will try to find the problem, if I do I will post my findings - perhaps you could do the same in return.

Yes you have interpreted the problem correctly, however I know how to solve it. You just have to zoom out the picture about a quarter of an inch from the border.

The problem with Ulead VideoStudio 10 is that it will not let you zoom out the picture at least that I have found so far.

In the General Preference window there is an option to display title safe area but it doesn't seem to do anything. This should give you a border in the preview screen that you could use as a guide as to how far to zoom out the picture so that all of the picture would show in a TV screen.

Thanks for your reply and I'll let you know if I find out anymore info.

The "Display Title Safe Area" function only appears in the "Title" section for when you are making...umm...titles!

lancecarr,

Well that makes sense and thanks for setting me straight.

I also would like to use those title safe lines as a guide to zoom out the still so that it will not be clipped when displaying on a TV.

Ulead seems to only allow you to zoom in on a still as far as I can see.
Do you know if it is possible to zoom out a still?

Sincerely,

Mike B

Mike,

Is this more what you are looking for

You can select the Distort Clip on the Attribute Tab, then resize the image so that it is within the title safe area.

You can also customize one of the Pan and zoom, so that it stays at 100%.

Ron,

Yes that is what I was looking for. however it would work better if there is some way to retain the aspect ratio so that you can't distort the image.

I don't follow what you said about the pan and zoom option. If I use that I want to zoom to somthing less than 100%.

There is. On the Image tab, under Resampling Option, there is a drop down menu where you can choose Keep Aspect Ratio or Fit To Project Size.

BTW, the VS10 User Manual is available HERE for download.

Hi

Another option is the overlay tracks.

The overlay tracks display the safe area the same as the title track.

In the overlay track you could resize your images placing them anywhere on screen.

Thanks all for your help.

Thanks Jeff for telling me where the manual is. When I downloaded I had gone to my sisters house because she has comcast cable access and I was downloading several other large items and overlooded the manual. I just downloaded it and can start finding out more information myself.

I am going to start another topic on comparing ulead video studio 10 to adobe premiere elements 2 if anyone has any input on that.

To continue on with Trevors idea, one thing that I do sometimes if I had a head cutoff, I put a black "color" in the top video track and then add the picture on the bottom track. In your case, you can just put a long black background for the entire length of your project, and then add your pictures to the overlay track and individually resize them, as needed. Just another idea.
