Recently I had to make a movie and deliver it on a dvd for approval and on a tape to be given to a professionnal lab for editing a lot of dvd's.
The settings : PAL 4:3,
capture with UMSP8 format DV type 1,
project settings : DV type 1 (Main Concept)
camcorder : digital.
No problem for the dvd.
For the tape, I tested 3 solutions :
1 - record from timeline to a DV file (DV Main Concept type 1),
and export the file to the camcorder = quality not good enough
2 - DV smart play : print to tape = same results
3 - playback the project in high quality, camcorder selected as viewing device, recording manually while playback = quality really better.
My questions :
Is something wrong with my settings ?
Why only the 3rd solution gives the best result ?
Are project settings important for creating a video file (on dvd or tape) ?
Recording movie to camcorder : quality

1. Load your timeline .DVP file.
2. Make sure your DV camera is connected to the computer using a firewire.
3. Select (F)ile, (E)xport, (DV)recording. Then press the Record button (not on the camera, on the screen). It will output to your camera in the appropriate format, automatically setting your camera to record mode. Because of this i put 3 seconds of black in front and at the end of the timeline. this allows time for the camera to set up and set down.

Are you sure you set the codec to Lower field first/
Have you tried with the default codec?

= yes

= yes, in my opinion, DV video encoder type 1 and Main Concept codec 2.4.16 type 1 give the same results.
I think when creating a new file all the clips are re-encoded, with adding a new compression. This can be detected in motion sequences.
I think there is another solution : create a dv file without compression, but
as my movie is 51 min. length, the dv file would be too big.

How can you create a DV file without compression? By definition, DV IS compressed, but re-rendering does not explain any quality loss, unless you do it umpteen times. A 51 minute DV file should be ~11 Gb long.
Suggestion: Delete all the contents of your temp files and then Print-to-tape from the timeline. This will force a render of all added effects, but the untouched parts will be sent to the camcorder exactly as they were transferred from the cam in the first place, without any possibility of quality loss, assuming your project settings correspond (green and yellow lines on the timeline).
Of course, a DV tape is not the ideal medium for transfer to DVD because you have no control on how the lab encodes it. Some companies may do a good ad hoc job but others may have "standard settings" for their encoder, irrespective of the job, with little or no "first play" (unless it is their own advertisement) or menu control. The ideal method is to author the project how YOU want it and encode it to a DTP tape. Alternatively, some mastering houses (but not all) will work from a DVD+/-R.

Yhank you Devil, you're right. I had completely forgotten the rule of these 2 yellow and green lines ! I have juste read again "Getting Results" about SmartRender indicators. What a precious book !
My project was a bit complex : clips from 6 different camcorders, editing with average 4 video tracks and more for the sounds tracks, 3d title ...
It is possible I had confused preview files, or parts without rendering. I should have delete them, re-render the whole project, survey the 2 colored lines ... or re-render with SmartRender off.
