Photo Express 5 and 6 changing resolution of pictures

A problem recently began when I was using PE5 version. I often want to use a smaller version of a picture, smaller in size and resolution. I make my changes to the picture, save it under a new name and all seems well. The problem starts when I want to move that picture to a different file in preparation for using it in a web page. For example, I save a picture at 600x450 px, resolution 99kb's. When I want to use that same photo with the same name in another file folder, I click on Save As..., leave the name and size the same and save it to the new file. When I go to the new file folder and check on the picture, the file with the same name has shrunk from 99kb to 12kb. I don't know why it is saving the file in this mini resolution. The results are horrible, very degraded. The worst thing is - it has altered my original photograph and I no longer have access to the original 1mb picture, only the degraded one. This has never happened before.

I then paid for and downloaded PE6 but the same problem is occurring. I uninstalled PE6 and used the repair option for PE5 to no avail. If anyone can explain why this is happening, it would be appreciated.
