Hello,
This is my first time here so forgive me if I don't know the protocol. I recently got a new computer with a DVD burner and simply want to burn movies from my hard drive to a DVD-R disc. I have been trying for 2 weeks and although college educated, this is way over my head. A friend suggested movie maker because it is user friendly (my favorite words).
I do not want to edit them, add anything to them or write anything more on the disc.
I decided to try the trial version first and it took me a couple days to find out I had to disenable most of my security and choose a secondary email address. I have been told to upload no less than 8 different programs from DVD identifiers to converters to players. I now have DivX bundle and movie maker. I've tried to read the tutorials but one questions leads to 5 more. All I want to do is burn movies for my family to watch on our stand alone dvd players.
I can launch movie maker, but as soon as I pick a category such as video disc and click next it goes back to the sign in page.
I have been determined to conquer this thing, but getting very very discouraged and feel pretty stupid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Feel welcome to visit my webpage and meet my family...

Because you've posted to a general discussion forum I do not know which Ulead product you are using.

If it is videoStudio then please view this link:

If it is DVD MovieFactory please view this link:

Harli,

This stuff is complicated. But, if you made your own Web Page, you can do it! I guess the thing that makes it the most complicated is that everybody has different hardware, different file formats, and different types of projects.

What is the source of your movies? The best source is a digital camcorder that records DV (digital video) to tape. You can connect that directly to your computer's Firewire port. Just about any video editing program can use the resulting AVI/DV file.

A camcorder that records directly to DVD (MPEG format) adds a few complications.

The most difficult source is analog video (VHS tapes).

I've never used Movie Maker... Apparently, it cannot make DVDs. Microsoft's web site says you need 3'rd party software to make DVDs. It is NOT just a matter of copying your movie file onto a blank DVD disc. (The DVD has a special format with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, VOB files, etc.) Ulead Movie Factory is probably the best choice for you, if you don't want to do much editing. Nero and Roxio also have low-cost software than can make DVDs from digital video files.

DivX is a special format that makes highly-compressed (small) video files that can be sent over the Internet. DivX files seem to cause lots of trouble for people who try to make DVDs from them.

One more thing you should be aware of... Some DVD players cannot play home-made "burned" DVDs. Some players have trouble with some blank-formats. Your best odds are with DVD-R. DVD+R's work in most players too. DVD-RW and DVD+RW are a bit less compatible.
