The video only goes-through your video card on it's way to you monitor. It only affects what you see on your monitor. It does NOT affect your video editing, the digital video files, or the quality of the DVDs that you make.

There is one issue to be aware of - The VGA colors on your computer monitor are different from the NTSC (or PAL) colors on a TV. So, for example, if you apply a color filter to adjust the colors to look "just right" on your computer, they might not look right on your TV.

As far as I know, the "extra" memory in your video card is used for generating game graphics. It should have no effect when you're simply feeding it a pre-existing video signal over the data bus.

Hi DVDDoug,

Thx for your explanation. I got it.

Based on this, what difference does it now make in video editing either to have a VGA card on board or 'out-board'?

Cheers

- speed and accuracy of preview during editing phase playback of project

The memory size is just a visible sign of hardware capabilities.
They don't load lots of memory on cheap circuitry, but the extra cost is negligible for higher price chips.

On Board Video cards "pinch RAM"
Outboard Video Cards have their own RAM.
You could say its like putting a bit of extra RAM in your computer.

As for the difference between a 64MB card and a 256MB card.
A few months ago I decided to replace my 64MB card with a spare 128MB card I had lying around. to be honest I didn't notice any difference at all.

As Doug said the extra RAM in these video cards will have an effect on those who use their computer for gaming where their space invaders are traveling quite fast!

All my machines have 256MB. But I do CadCam (computer aided design & manufacturing). More memory makes a big difference for graphics performance. I have not done any comparisons with VS10 .

But isn't More always better... Horsepower, Volume, Money, Beer.... :D

The difference in price is not that much. You can find 8X AGP cards with NVidia chip sets and 256MB for as little as $50. A good FX5900 for $80.

Try www.tigerdirect.com or www.newegg.com
