I can capture in MPEG-2 (and have using the Sonic software bundled with the machine). There are two reasons I am testing the ULEAD software,
Because the Sonic software:
1) Does not have a de-interlace option
2) Has a horrible editing program
Trevor -- sorry to jump in again. I had intended to leave it alone after my earlier post. But the central problem for jobu and me at least, is NOT what format it is best to capture in, but how to change the codec for this or any other capture and/or encoding process in _any_ format...
I am going to see if I can't find a VS9 demo somewhere to test out.
But like Ken says, I can't change the codec in VS and it keeps telling me I need to change the codec.
You have a Hauppauge WinTV PVR150 television card.
The best means of capture is to use its native program WinTV2000.
Record the program and then use VideoStudio to create the DVD.
I too am getting this error message in Videostudio 10. I do have the Hauppauge PVR-150 capture card. I currently have installed DVD MovieFactory 5 and Videostudio 10 as I am trying these out to see if I would like to use them and what they each can do. In Moviefactory 5, when I choose to capture video from the Hauppauge capture card, it shows the source at TV_Analog_0 and it captures video in mpeg format with no problems. In Videostudio 10, when I choose to capture video, it recognizes the card as Hauppauge PVR-150 and I get the error when trying to capture in mpeg format. I guess this is more of a rhetorical question, but if someone might have any insight into this, please let us know. Why would Moviefactory5 work properly with this card, yet Videostudio 10 not?

There is another thread on this issue it seems that VS10 doesn't yet support the Hauppauge TV card even though VS9 DMF4 and DMF5 all work with it. No doubt eventually a hotfix will appear.

Thanks for your help. I downloaded WinTV2000 but the problem is it does not have a de-interlace option (that I can see anyway).
I assumed your intension was to create a dvd, so why do you want to de-interlace your video.
If you intend to create a dvd then you should use interlaced, this will be either upper or lower field.

I haven't had any trouble capturing with other programs (like WinTV or the crappy Sonic software bundled with my comp) but I still can't capture in MPEG using VS10. The program wants me to use a different codec but it won't let me change it.
The reason I want de-interlace is for making web/email-ready videos, playable in WMP for example.
As we are now aware that VS 10 does not support Mpeg capture from your Hauppauge device at the moment.
You are left with no option but to capture using WinTV2000 or similar as recommended by Steve.
You are best to capture in the field order that the program is transmitted. Upper or Lower?? Then use VS to recode to frame based, or select a format such as Wmv. Share – Share Video on Line which gives Wmv template options.
Sorry to jump in again. It's not that I disagree with anything that has been said in the posts on this thread. Rather, it is what has _NOT_ been said. And perhaps nothing has been said because no one here knows. But we remain totally ignorant as to how to change the codecs.... Regardless of everything else, that was the original question, and it is a question which remains unanswered. Perhaps Ulead techs are the only ones who might be able to answer, but again, as we all know, the chances of getting an answer here from them on that one are vanishingly remote!!!
I have today submitted the following to Ulead via their tech support form:
May I bring two items to your attention identified by various members of the user forum.
1. The ESC on the keyboard needs to be 'trapped' because accidentaly pressing it appears to cause all of your current work to be irretrievably lost http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13465
This appears to be an across the board issue with all/most Ulead software.
2. Several members have reported that they are unable to capture via their Hauppauge TV cards (Various models) using VS10.
Thank you for sending us some issues from our Ulead forum. below are my answer for your two inquiries.
For the number 1, the problem seems to be a bug in the program
the other user is right the program automatically saves the work after closing the disc authoring program. The program should work the same thing when closing by the Esc key. We're currently we don't have fix for this problem. Please be informed that I will forward this problem to our R&D department and the related departments in our office so they could come up we the appropriate patch for this problem.
Ulead capture programs normally supports capturing only with the devices that are compliant with VFW(Video for Windows) and Directshow capture driver, and the drivers that are listed in the program's capture plugin (Tools menu>Change capture plugin). The other plugins refers for the specific devices that are having by the most of users based on the inquiries that are sent in our support system and forums.
Also, Ulead may come up to show the patches for some capture devices where our softwares are bundled in the specific device which are using the special capture driver or hardware compression driver which is not normally supported by purchased versions of our softwares. So users could safely remove the bundled program if they decided to upgrade their program into purchased version (in the same version number) due to some limitations in the bundled Ulead program. This is like what happened to some Hauppauge devices where UVS 9 is bundled.
