Video Format List

Post by jobu22 »

I downloaded the trial version of VS10 to test it out.

I want to capture some video in MPEG-2 but when I try to capture it says:

MPEG capture does not accept HCW2 codec.
Please select a suitable codec from the video format list.
It is recommended to use codec (1) YUV codec first, then (2) RGB-24 codec.

I cannot find where to select or change the codec. I have searched through properties and settings. There were no help files available in the trial (or at least they aren't working for me). I also searched the forums but didn't find anything.

Can anyone help me here?

Thanks.

You can in fact download the User's Manual in .pdf format from the Ulead site. But it won't help you. A quick flick through it seems to indicate that it doesn't mention codecs at all!! And what seems worse, the section on capturing direct to mpeg (pp. 55/56) seems to be lifted directly from the manual for VS9, and is no longer quite accurate with regard to VS10!!

It says: "• Click Options and select Video and Audio Capture Property Settings. In the dialog box that opens, click the Capture tab then click Advanced. The MPEG Settings dialog box then appears in which you can customize attributes for the MPEG file." However, as far as I can see, in VS 10, when you click on the Options cogwheel, you don't get a "Video and Audio Capture Property Settings" (which you DO get in VS9), but instead get a dropdown menu consisting of three items: 1) Capture Options; 2) Capture Properties; and 3) MPEG settings. There is no Advanced button on any of them, and I also cannot otherwise find anything which will alow a change of codec. I distinctly recall finding such a control in VS9, and it was relatively obvious. But I now can't recall exactly how I did it.

This reminds me of something else: the Product Codec Information button in Tools has also disappeared from VS10.

Thanks for the info.....

Funny, when I click on the options cogwheel I get the same first two options but my third option is "Field Order" - (perhaps that is the same thing as MPEG options but it doesn't say MPEG options).

So, either they forgot to put the codec functionality in or they removed it???

So far I like the program but if I can't change the codecs I then I guess I'll have to find something else. I tried Pinnacle and I didn't care for it so hopefully I'm just missing something here.

Hi Ken

Maybe I have a different vs10 (trial) but the capture settings and process to find and edit them are the same as Version 9.

1 / I select the capture tab
2 / I select capture video
3 / I select ‘format DVD’
4 / I select the ‘Options Cogwheel’
5 / I see a window giving three choices.
6 / I select ‘video and audio capture property settings’
7 / I select the capture tab

These are shown as default capture properties

MPEG Files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48.0 KHz, Stereo

The properties are good for one hour capture, but I prefer Digital Dolby.

8 / I select ‘Advanced’ and edit the template.

Hope this Helps

Thanks Trevor. Strange that your drop down menu is a little different from mine. But anyway, either way, we end up with similar screens. And the fundamental point remains that there seems no way to get into the codecs you use.

Ken,
Writing this during a break on a course so away from my own machine at the moment.
The Advanced settings you mention appear after you alter one of the ini files
as shown here:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... ght=#57597
I haven't checked VS10 yet as I am currently setting up a replacement C drive due to some bad blocks on my existing one.

Hi All

I think we are talking about two different ‘Advanced ‘ buttons

One is in File ‘Project Properties’ edit—compression tab-- which has to be activated by adding ‘Advance=1’
to the UVS ini file.
In C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0

The other is in the capture stage, which should be available without changing anything.
(Capture—capture video—dvd or Mpeg format—options—video and audio capture properties settings —capture tab—advanced)

Isn't that the purpose of the menu option:
Tools | Change capture plug-in ?

Hi

Tools / Change capture plug-in is the same as selecting the ‘Format’ from the capture screen.

Once selected you can click ‘Options’ / and change the capture properties of that plug-in.

What kind of program requires editing of ini files to activate a common feature (call me crazy but I consider codecs a common feature of video editing)? Anyway, I looked in all of the ini files (including UVS) and there was no occurence of the word Advance.

I tried the change capture plug-ins option but that did not solve the problem, I still got the same error.

Is it possible my problems are due to the Trial version?

Hi

As I said earlier there seems to be a little confusion as to the advanced buttons.

You should not need to add the ‘advance=1’ to the ini file in order to do what you want and that is capture. The ‘advance=1’ is associated with the project properties not the capture.
Going back to VS 7, some wanted to use 16:9 widescreen. This was normally unavailable but could be accessed by modifying the ini file.

The ‘advance=1’ does not exist and has to be added, that is why you cannot find it.

OK
Capture process:-

I have a TV card fitted to my pc , and VS defaults to it as a capture source.
What are you connecting to the pc and how?

1 / I select the ‘Capture Tab’
2 / I select ‘Capture Video
3 / I select Format DVD (this uses the default template suitable for capture to Mpeg 2)
4 / If I wished to modify the template I select ‘Options’ ( but you should not have to select ‘options’, the settings are ok as default)
5 / I select the ‘Capture Tab’

I can view the capture settings in the info window, they look like this

MPEG Files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48.0 KHz, Stereo

6 / If I wish to edit I can select the Advanced button.
I am allowed to change some settings but not all. The frame size is unavailable as they are dvd standard.

7 / I change the audio to Digital Dolby.
8 / Select OK and OK again

I am ready to capture.

9 / I set the capture duration in the Digital Clock.
10 / I select a new ‘Capture Folder’ this is also known as the Working Folder. This is where your capture files will be saved.

11 / I press capture.

What part of this process stops you?

I see, I thought it was in there that but perhaps set to 0. My mistake.

However, where I get stuck is when I press capture I get this message:

MPEG capture does not accept HCW2 codec.
Please select a suitable codec from the video format list.
It is recommended to use codec (1) YUV codec first, then (2) RGB-24 codec.

I get this message whether I have MPEG or DVD selected. So, the problem seems to be that I cannot change the codec. I've tried the change capture plug in with no success.

Thanks.

Hi

What type of capture device are you using?

I have searched the web for HCW2 and it seems that mpeg will not support this codec. Most queries point to a Win Tv PVR-150. Unfortunately I don’t know what that is, I assume a capture card.

It appears that you should be capturing in Avi format, which is what you indicated on your first post.

Selecting Format Avi may allow you to capture. But this will be at 65 Gb per hour. If you can capture try just one minute as a test.

Use a compressor to reduce the file size.

You need to select Format Avi--Options--capture properties settings………..tick use software compression—advanced—try selecting—Microsoft video 1

Hope this Helps

It's something like that, don't remember the exact name (was built into the computer).

I am able to capture in AVI, I've tried that, but that would eat up a lot of hard drive in a hurry. The message I get indicates that I should change the codec in the video format list and recommends a YUV codec - but I cannot find anyplace to do what is recommended.

Hi

Afaik the yuv codec is Avi

If you select Avi compressor Microsoft video 1.

Will capture at 13 Gb per hour.

I think it is your capture device that can only give Avi.
